What…no, it must be for a magnum?
To finish off the near-completion of my cycling trip through Alsace, my friend and I decided push the boat out a bit at dinner in a smart restaurant just south of Bergheim. Having drunk more then enough white wine our thoughts turned to red. But, not being able to face another Alsace Pinot Noir, we look at the prestige section and there it was, gulp. 1994 Chateau Le Gay at 795 Euros. Not a magnum, just a single bottle. For comparison, we have a bottle of the 1993 on sale at £36.95.
When pushed, the owner was suitably Gallic in her response, shrugging her shoulders and basically saying, that’s the price, you don’t have to buy it. This little episode has reminded me of many occasions when I’ve looked at wine lists and thought. You’re having a laugh. Galvin Windows for example, £120 for a bottle of 1994 Cissac.
I would love to hear other examples.
