Château Margaux

"The 1990 Chateau Margaux has turned into a sensational wine that eclipses both the 1988 and 1989...and then some. It has a gorgeous, ethereal bouquet with sumptuous red berry fruit, leather, camphor and licorice—it is the kind of nose in which you just immerse yourself. Is there a hint of brettanomyces here? If there is, I don't really care. The palate is soft and sensual with incredible depth. Fleshy and corpulent for Chateau Margaux, and yet surfeit with breeding and finesse, there are layers or red fruit, kirsch, sage and fig, later tobacco and cloves. I feel that this 1990 Château Margaux is at its peak and yet the harmony, the sheer swagger of this wine just wins you over. Magnificent. Tasted May 2016." - Neal Martin

Sine Qua Non Syrah Piranha Waterdance

"The 2014 Syrah Piranha Waterdance is young and unevolved (more than the Grenache) and sports an inky blue color to go with lots of minerality, notes of cassis, violets and pepper, full-bodied richness and a surprisingly serious, structured, even masculine vibe on the palate. A blend of 81% Syrah, 8% Petite Sirah and the rest Mourvedre, Touriga Nacional and Graciano, fermented with 26% whole clusters and aging in 54% new French oak, it will be bottled just after the Grenache, in April of next year." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Opus One

"Aged in 100% new French oak for 17 months and in bottle for 14 months prior to release, the 2004 Opus One is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of lead pencil shavings, black currants and a hint of toasty oak. More evolved than usual, this full-bodied, opulent 2004 is part of the new wave of Opus Ones made under the administration of Philippe Dhalluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, who has begun to exploit this estate’s enormous potential. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for another 20 years." - Robert Parker

Barolo Riserva Monfortino Conterno

"I have been fortunate to taste and drink the 2004 Monfortino many times, going back to the days when the wine was in barrel. Even from the beginning, the 2004 offers striking aromatics, silky fruit and exceptional overall balance, all qualities that remain very much in evidence to this day. At a complete vertical of Monfortino from magnum going back to 1970 last year, the 2004 was one of the very finest wines, which only shows where it stands in the pantheon of Monfortinos. To be sure, vintages such as 1999 and 2002 deliver more power, but when it comes to pure finesse, the 2004 plays in a league of its own. Only the 2008 is similar in style. I imagine the 2004 Monfortino will give readers an utterly spellbinding drinking experience for the next few decades." - Antonio Galloni

Maison Olivier Bernstein, Chambertin Grand Cru

"Here too there is just enough reduction to render assessing the nose difficult but the underlying fruit clearly seems ripe. There is both excellent verve and delineation to the more obviously mineral-driven, bold and muscular flavors that possess a sleek mouth feel on the marvelously long, serious and built-to-age finale. This is a classically styled and proportioned Chambertin with the youthful austerity to provide it. This, together with the Bonnes Mares, is the best in the cellar in 2015." - Allen Meadows

Quintarelli, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

"The 2007 Amarone della Valpolicella is a real stunner. Rich, seductive and generous, the 2007 captures all of the intensity of the year. Wild red cherry, licorice, menthol, spice, vanillin seem to envelop every corner of the palate. Sumptuous and yet very much classic in its weight and feel, 2007 Amarone is a winner. The 2007 can be enjoyed now, but it also has enough stuffing to drink well for many years to come, although it will likely not be as long-lived as some other recent vintages. I doubt that will be a concern for most readers. This is a fabulous wine by any measure. A 2007 Riserva, as well as Alzero, will follow." - Antonio Galloni

Penfolds Grange

"Very deep garnet-purple in color the 2008 Grange reveals a truly decadent nose with tons of spices, fruit cake and black & blue fruit compote notes along with nuances of chocolate and potpourri. The full and rich, multi-layered palate has a little oak still showing, it is going through a little bit of a structural stand-out stage, but it doesn't detract on the long and complex finish. It still needs a good few years to develop, though this very opulent, expressive Grange shows the very best of this vintage and the vineyards it hails from." - Lisa Perotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

Domaine Jean Grivot, Richebourg Grand Cru

"There is the first whiff of secondary character to the gorgeously complex red, black and violet-infused aromas that are trimmed with a dazzling array of spice and sandalwood hints. The round, intense and overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess real power and superb intensity that slowly builds from the mid-palate to the explosively persistent and robust finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the linear and stony backend that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the still notably firm tannic spine. This is a big wine but it remains impeccably well-balanced and it should live for decades, indeed it is still very much in need of more cellar time." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Ducs

"The robe is lightening at the rim but there is no bricking. The elegant, pure, spicy and beautifully complex nose features notes of wet stone, earth and now fully secondary fruit though interestingly there is not even a hint of sous bois. The mineral-laced, intense and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors are crystalline in their purity while offering stunningly good length on the still ever-so-slightly structured but velvety backend. For my taste this still robust yet still reasonably refined effort has reached that stage where it will probably continue to soften but probably not add a great deal more in terms of overall depth. In sum, this is one of the great vintages for Clos des Ducs and while it may not be the best Ducster of all time it certainly deserves honorable mention. Tasted several times in the last few years (November 2013 was the most recent) with largely consistent notes." - Allen Meadows

Château Beychevelle

"Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Beychevelle 2009 here seems more muted on the nose: introspective and surly, reluctant to offer the fruit intensity that its peers are offering at this early juncture. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit on the entry tinged with leather and dried orange peel. There is good weight and structure towards the finish that is “classic” in style, the oak playing a secondary role to the fruit. Nothing wrong with that. Very fine. Tasted January 2013." - Neal Martin
