DRC, Echezeaux Grand Cru

"Discreet, reserved and subtle Vosne spice aromas lead to closed, slightly tough and still quite structured, indeed almost hard flavors that offer good depth and the balance is suspect at this point. Still, there is enough mid-palate density to suggest that this may very well have the stuffing to mature into something very interesting even though it appears to be in a time warp at the moment as it has seemingly not evolved at all in more than 5 years. For the patient AND optimistic. Another recent bottle was very odd as the nose was rather funky with a distinct note of acetone that dissipated with air but never completely disappeared with much more moderate structure than the bottle reviewed above displayed. However, the overall quality was the same as this is a perfectly good effort but certainly not a distinguished one." - Allen Meadows

"Substantial, very full and expressive nose of blackberries, pinot extract, game and earth that frame intense, complex, large-scaled flavors, excellent length and grand cru finesse. DRC, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"This possesses a clasic RSV nose with kaleidoscopic aromas of Vosne spice, black fruit and hints of earth and violets that is followed by rich and velvety middle weight flavors that offer genuinely stunning complexity and exceptional length. To my taste this has finally arrived at its apogee though it should last for another 20 years before beginning a gentle decline. Multiple and consistent notes save for two bottles that were plagued by both high levels of volatile acidity and reduction; moreover both of them came from perfect storage and appeared to be in pristine condition." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru (Bin Soiled Label)

"Stylistically, this borrows elements from both the '97 and the '96 as it combines moderate floral notes with most of the spice, soy and hoisin of the '96 plus the densest flavors of any vintage to this point. The mid-palate doesn't have quite the same sap of the '96 and the long, dusty finish offers a hint of chocolate and violets. This too has the potential to be very long lived and even at 20 years of age, it's clear that it still has another 5ish years or so to go before it reaches its full potential. Multiple notes with consistent results; in fact, a recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was even better than the bottle in the big La Tâche tasting held in early '03." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Echezeaux Grand Cru

"(opened from personal storage). The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti fashioned outstanding '96s and while this will not challenge the dominance of its more esteemed stable mates, it is clearly a lovely effort. The expressive nose displays lovely spice and violet aromas that offer more elegance and finesse than usual and lead to rich, sweet and moderately structured flavors supported by bright but not aggressive acidity and excellent finishing persistence. I quite like the '96 Ech and while it can finally be approached now with pleasure it should be capable of holding at this level for years to come. Multiple, and consistent, notes." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"(with thanks to Bruce Khouri). Fantastically pure with the classic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, very structured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A fine, if not genuinely great, vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the '96 Grands Ech and this should improve for most of another decade and last for 50 years. Very classy juice. Note: while it's happened only twice in my experience, the '96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibit the purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; I also had two recent bottles that displayed distinct signs of brett. However, I have tasted so many outstanding bottles of the '96 LT that I view these examples as outliers." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin Grand Cru

"(opened from personal storage and thanks to Andy Goodman). A fantastically complex and still impressively fresh nose offers up impressively dense and concentrated aromas of mostly black fruit that are blended with an incredible array of spice, earth and discreet hints of game. There is serious size and weight to the imposingly scaled big, rich, intense and mouth coating flavors that possess outstanding depth, power and stunning length. This is not a particularly structured wine but the sheer complexity and class combine to create a simply knock out Chambertin, worthy of every accolade reserved for the very best in Burgundy. This is really lovely stuff in a forward style though note well that it will be capable of aging for years. So that readers are not confused by my description, this is not as structured a Chambertin as several other vintages yet it seems to add depth with every passing year. As such this is why I am suggesting holding it further though it could certainly be drunk now with considerable enjoyment. Tasted on multiple occasions, including twice in 2016, with consistent notes." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"(opened from personal storage and thanks to Bruce Khouri). This displays a positively classic nose of soaring Asian spices, ripe plum and a gamut of ripe, pure and lacy red and black fruits with the latter predominating all wrapped together with a seductive kiss of sweetly scented, highly perfumed violets; the nose is, in a word, intoxicating. All of this aromatic intensity leads to remarkably powerful, linear and still taut flavors that show simply unbelievable complexity and stunning length. This will very likely surpass every other RSV from the Domaine in recent memory from a sheer aromatics perspective as the nose really is dazzling. For my taste this has just about arrived at the front end of its peak drinkability though it should hold easily for years to come. Consistent notes save for one bottle that seemed a bit edgy and drying and not at all like what I have described above." - Allen Meadows

Bouchard Pere et Fils, La Romanee Grand Cru

"Surprisingly forward and expressive for young La Romanée with incredibly concentrated, smoky, slightly oaky, spicy black fruit aromas that lead to velvety, dense, tight, understated, broad scaled flavors of stunning length. The depth here is nothing short of mind blowing and this is clearly a notch up from the 2000 if not quite as promising as either the '98 or the '99. Still, with the astonishing level of extract, this could conceivably surprise on the upside." - Allen Meadows

"This is very clearly still on the way up as the cool and ultra-pure nose remains relatively primary with only a touch of secondary development in evidence on the earthy, spicy and elegant dark berry fruit aromas. There is outstanding density to the big-bodied flavors that possess robust power and obvious muscularity all wrapped in firm, focused and moderately austere finish that goes on and on. I particularly like the inner mouth perfume and while this is certainly a forceful, intense wine, it's not a bruiser as there is lovely balance. In sum, this is a great effort that will, for my taste in any event, need another 7 to 10 years of cellar time to arrive at its apogee." - Allen Meadows

"The aromatic profile here is more expressive, finer, more elegant and more complex though the flavors are not as big or masculine in character yet the harmony is seriously impressive and the tannins are so fine as to be almost invisible though it's clear that this will require at least a decade to really hit its stride. "Here the aromas are more elegant and more complex but not necessarily riper with high-toned red pinot fruit and an attractive dried herb note that sits atop earthy yet fine and refined medium full flavors that deliver outstanding detail and delineation. This is a classically styled wine with prominent but ripe acidity and dusty tannins that have just enough phenolic maturity. This will be one of the more elegant and refined vintages of Clos des Lambrays and the balance is such that it should age well over the moderate term." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Richebourg Grand Cru

"Initially this was quite firmly reduced though after 15 minutes or so of aeration, vigorous swirling coaxes ripe but fresh and superbly elegant and pure aromas that are wonderfully broad and include red, black, blue and violet aromas as well as seemingly a full cupboard of Asian spices. The robust and extremely rich, full-bodied and naturally sweet flavors that are quite floral in the mouth culminate in a detailed and hugely long finish where the tannic spine is firm but not hard or unduly rigid. In the same fashion as many of the top 2005s today, this is years away from being ready for prime time and it's definitely a wine to leave buried in the back of your cellar but when this is finally ready it's going to be brilliant." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Michel Gaunoux, Corton Renardes Grand Cru

"An overtly sauvage nose features game-inflected aromas of dark berries, plum, floral and earth nuances that also exhibit a hint of smoke. Somewhat unusually, this is also quite finely detailed and while this is openly powerful, it's not at all rustic or tough though it is exceptionally tight and backward at present on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is even more restrained than the Rugiens and like its stable mate, it's pointless to acquire this without the express intension of forgetting it in your cellar. That said, this offers fantastic upside potential to those who have the patience." - Allen Meadows

I very much like the balance and about the only nit is a hint of warmth. "A generous dollop of moderately toasty oak mixes with the highly layered nose of black cherry, cassis, warm earth and an impressive array of sauvage and underbrush notes. There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess an imposing sense of scale that continues onto the textured and mouth coating finish. This will need plenty of patience however." - Allen Meadows
