Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Beze

"Substantial, very full and expressive nose of blackberries, pinot extract, game and earth that frame intense, complex, large-scaled flavors, excellent length and grand cru finesse. A very impressive Clos de Bèze that can be enjoyed now though will clearly be better in 3 to 5 years." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tâche Grand Cru

"A stunning, massive, full-on and completely classic La Tâche nose that displays almost unbelievable complexity so with many different elements that it is impossible to even begin to describe them all; the primary components include ethereal and still fresh pinot fruit, clove, knock out spiciness, anise, hoisin, soy and a trace of earth but these elements only hint at the sheer depth. The flavors are big, rich, refined, classy, penetrating and superbly powerful yet everything is in perfect balance and there is more than sufficient sève to balance off the still considerable tannins. The finish is intense, pure and so long that it is haunting; I could literally still taste this wine days later after I had it because it had such a dramatic and emotional impact. In its youth, this was one of the finest young Burgundies that I have ever been privileged to try and it only seems to get better with each passing year. For my taste, this is getting close to arriving at its peak but it's not quite there though again, I stress that this is to my taste and some may find it to already be in its sweet spot of maturation. In short, this is absolutely brilliant." - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

DRC, Romanee Conti Grand Cru

"Medium ruby color. Initially, this is aromatically tight and closed but after 2 hours, it absolutely explodes from the glass with a breathtaking panoply of Asian spices, exotic fruit aromas and a touch of earth followed by rich, lush, almost opulent flavors that melt in the mouth and coat the palate with a layer of velvet on the fantastically long finish. This is a dramatic wine in every sense of the word yet it's not at all showy but rather discreet and understated. I particularly like the sense of inner power and purity of expression and this is as good a post '45 RC as I ever hope to drink. It should last for another 50 years and if you ever have the chance, don't miss it! Save for one so-so bottle, I have very consistent notes." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"This possesses a clasic RSV nose with kaleidoscopic aromas of Vosne spice, black fruit and hints of earth and violets that is followed by rich and velvety middle weight flavors that offer genuinely stunning complexity and exceptional length. To my taste this has finally arrived at its apogee though it should last for another 20 years before beginning a gentle decline. Multiple and consistent notes save for two bottles that were plagued by both high levels of volatile acidity and reduction; moreover both of them came from perfect storage and appeared to be in pristine condition." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Echezeaux Grand Cru

"Perfumed, sexy black fruit aromas explode from the glass and the big, robust, structured, intense, full-bodied flavors display a wonderful sappy and spicy quality plus good if not special length. This is still moderately structured yet there is already a velvety quality to the finish that makes this really quite seductive and while the '95 Ech is certainly a quality effort, there is a small hole in the mid-palate that prevents this from rising to the next level. In short, delicious but not exceptional by the standards of this wine. Consistent notes." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Richebourg Grand Cru

"This too is reserved and restrained with an almost completely closed nose that reveals only glimpses of fresh black fruit even after extended aeration. The flavors however are rich and offer excellent detail and are underpinned by dense yet ripe tannins and good extract. I very much like the style of this though it is clearly for the patient and I suspect this will always have a rather strict personality. This has put on a bit of weight and a bit of richness since the big Richebourg tasting in '01 and appears to be better balanced than the prior bottle but otherwise, it is quite similar." - Allen Meaows

DRC, Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru

"Still deep ruby center but beginning to lighten at the edges. Wonderfully spicy, indeed even explosive black fruits with a touch of damp earth and underbrush lead to dense, extremely concentrated and sappy full-bodied flavors of impressive richness and length. Like many '95s at this stage, the finish shows a moderate amount of tannic astringency but this should pass with time as the structure is ripe. However, note that the '95 GE is so big that it will require plenty of cellar time to arrive at its apogee." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru (Bin Soiled Label)

"Stylistically, this borrows elements from both the '97 and the '96 as it combines moderate floral notes with most of the spice, soy and hoisin of the '96 plus the densest flavors of any vintage to this point. The mid-palate doesn't have quite the same sap of the '96 and the long, dusty finish offers a hint of chocolate and violets. This too has the potential to be very long lived and even at 20 years of age, it's clear that it still has another 5ish years or so to go before it reaches its full potential. Multiple notes with consistent results; in fact, a recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was even better than the bottle in the big La Tâche tasting held in early '03." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"(with thanks to Bruce Khouri). Fantastically pure with the classic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, very structured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A fine, if not genuinely great, vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the '96 Grands Ech and this should improve for most of another decade and last for 50 years. Very classy juice. Note: while it's happened only twice in my experience, the '96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibit the purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; I also had two recent bottles that displayed distinct signs of brett. However, I have tasted so many outstanding bottles of the '96 LT that I view these examples as outliers." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Grand Cru VV

"In contrast to the general style of the vintage, this is still aromatically austere though with coaxing, reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of chocolate with flavors that are huge but fine, powerful but subtle and rich yet detailed with a stupendously long finish that offers intense minerality where the only very minor nit is a hint of warmth. This is genuinely stunning juice and not to be missed if you have the chance though I underscore that it is most definitely in need of further cellar time. Tasted multiple times with mostly consistent notes save for one recent bottle that displayed noticeable volatile acidity that may have been due to a faulty cork while another example displayed distinct lactic aromas." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"(opened from personal storage and thanks to Bruce Khouri). This displays a positively classic nose of soaring Asian spices, ripe plum and a gamut of ripe, pure and lacy red and black fruits with the latter predominating all wrapped together with a seductive kiss of sweetly scented, highly perfumed violets; the nose is, in a word, intoxicating. All of this aromatic intensity leads to remarkably powerful, linear and still taut flavors that show simply unbelievable complexity and stunning length. This will very likely surpass every other RSV from the Domaine in recent memory from a sheer aromatics perspective as the nose really is dazzling. For my taste this has just about arrived at the front end of its peak drinkability though it should hold easily for years to come. Consistent notes save for one bottle that seemed a bit edgy and drying and not at all like what I have described above." - Allen Meadows

Bouchard Pere et Fils, La Romanee Grand Cru

"Surprisingly forward and expressive for young La Romanée with incredibly concentrated, smoky, slightly oaky, spicy black fruit aromas that lead to velvety, dense, tight, understated, broad scaled flavors of stunning length. The depth here is nothing short of mind blowing and this is clearly a notch up from the 2000 if not quite as promising as either the '98 or the '99. "(with thanks to Pat Dukes). This is surprisingly fresh and elegant with its pretty floral and overtly spicy notes that add nuance to the ripe but not roasted black fruit aromas. While clearly well-concentrated and powerful there is fine precision, refinement and purity to the strikingly complex and vibrant flavors that are supple on the mid-palate but quite firm on the finish. There is the barest trace of warmth but it's a background note and overally this is superbly classy juice. In the context of what is typical for the DRC RSV this is a big but stylish wine that should live for years, indeed it is still very much on the way up - patience!" - Allen Meadows

Domaine des Lambrays, Clos Des Lambrays Grand Cru

"Here the aromas are more elegant and more complex but not necessarily riper with high-toned red pinot fruit and an attractive dried herb note that sits atop earthy yet fine and refined medium full flavors that deliver outstanding detail and delineation. This is a classically styled wine with prominent but ripe acidity and dusty tannins that have just enough phenolic maturity. This will be one of the more elegant and refined vintages of Clos des Lambrays and the balance is such that it should age well over the moderate term." - Allen Meadows

"This was last year and still is considerably more reserved and less expressive though the discreet aromas are decidedly more elegant with much more floral influence on the violet and rose petal infused aromas that are nuanced by soy, hoisin and clove notes that can also be found on the muscular, robust and powerful big-bodied flavors that exude dry extract on the detailed and hugely persistent finish. This is both stylish and classy with tautly wound flavors that have that great sense of underlying tension and cuts-like-a-knife precision. Note however that this is, at a comparable stage, so much more primary and backwards than normal that this will need a very long time in the cellar to arrive at its majority, indeed I am not at all sure that the 20 years that I am suggesting will be sufficient." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

DRC, Richebourg Grand Cru

"Initially this was quite firmly reduced though after 15 minutes or so of aeration, vigorous swirling coaxes ripe but fresh and superbly elegant and pure aromas that are wonderfully broad and include red, black, blue and violet aromas as well as seemingly a full cupboard of Asian spices. The robust and extremely rich, full-bodied and naturally sweet flavors that are quite floral in the mouth culminate in a detailed and hugely long finish where the tannic spine is firm but not hard or unduly rigid. In the same fashion as many of the top 2005s today, this is years away from being ready for prime time and it's definitely a wine to leave buried in the back of your cellar but when this is finally ready it's going to be brilliant." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"As noted in the original review just after bottling, the once reserved nose is now starting to come out of its shell as there is plenty of the hallmark spice and floral components that are broad and deep and while the aromas are still on the restrained side, they are still most impressive. The big and generous flavors are an exercise in contrasts as they are at once round and rich while remaining wonderfully defined and precise with an intense minerality coming to the fore, all wrapped in a linear, precise and palate staining finish that not is explosive. Even at such a young age, the palate impression is entirely harmonious and the transparency and purity of expression are something to see. As I noted in the original review, while I do not argue that the '06 La Tâche rivals vintages like '99 or '05, there is something special about this one that causes me to already be in love with it. In a word, magnificent and my original description needs no modification except perhaps to observe that this is a Zen-like vintage for La Tâche as it is very calm and deliberate in demeanor." - Allen Meadows

"An ultra elegant, pure and quite delicately fruited and spiced nose that is extremely fresh, floral and expansive that is more layered still as it introduces seductively textured, detailed and gorgeously delineated middle weight flavors that possess laser-like focus if less density than is usually seen with this wine. Indeed, this is rather like a ballerina with limited power and weight but the watch word here is purity, purity and purity. "An overtly sauvage nose features game-inflected aromas of dark berries, plum, floral and earth nuances that also exhibit a hint of smoke. Somewhat unusually, this is also quite finely detailed and while this is openly powerful, it's not at all rustic or tough though it is exceptionally tight and backward at present on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is even more restrained than the Rugiens and like its stable mate, it's pointless to acquire this without the express intension of forgetting it in your cellar. "The restrained and markedly cool nose displays an impressive variety of floral and spice hints that add a sense of elegance to the stunningly complex ripe dark berry fruit and plum aromas. While this is almost always a muscular and at times even robust wine young, in 2010 it offers a truly remarkably sophisticated mouth feel because like the RSV, the tannins are refined and fine-grained. Moreover, there is the same knockout complexity that the nose displays on the intensely mineral-driven finish and overall, this is a complete wine of simply fantastic length. It also offers a completely different, and much more masculine, experience than the RSV. I can't wait to try both in 15 to 20 years. "This is perhaps even more floral than the Richebourg and every bit as spicy on the ultra-pure, cool and remarkably elegant mix of red and blue pinot fruit, red currant and wild red berries that are openly mineral-inflected. As with all of the DRC '10s, the equally stony flavors and supporting tannins are extremely fine and while there is ample power and vibrancy, the palate feel is all silk and satin. To be sure, this is a big wine with impressive concentration but this is definitely not cut from the same cloth as say the 2005 or 2009 versions are. I can admire both styles but this one is seriously lovely. Readers should note however that while the 2010 LT is exceptionally fine it will still require some 20 to 25 years of cellar time before it reaches its full majority but when it does, it will be considered one of the all-time great vintages for this incredibly storied wine. If your pocketbook can stand the damage, this is an absolute 'do no miss under any circumstances' wine." - Allen Meadows

Large-scaled but primary and light on its feet; silky in texture but a bit hardened today by the CO2. Shows intriguing citrus peel notes: is it the excess gas or the cool site? Domaine Robert Chevillon, Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Roncieres

"There is a trace of herbal tea that adds breadth to the otherwise exceptionally fresh and equally pure red currant and wild cherry aromas. There is really beautiful intensity to the precise flavors that are on the lighter side yet deliver that wonderful quality of power without weight. This is first rate as it's balanced, harmonious and offers excellent depth and length." - Allen Meadows

Domaine des Lambrays, Clos Des Lambrays Grand Cru

"This offers a big step up in aromatic complexity with its ripe and expressive nose of red berry fruit liqueur, cassis, plum and violets. There is a very suave and seductive texture to the medium weight plus flavors that possess an abundance of mouth coating extract, all wrapped in a long, balanced and delicious finish where a touch of minerality adds lift." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

"Noticeable wood spice is present on the otherwise bright, pure and very fresh aromas of newly turned earth and a broad array of wild red berries. There is excellent volume and plenty of punch to the structured and firm large-scaled flavors that possess a lovely texture on the saline-infused finish. This is less austere than usual and should amply repay mid to even longer-term aging." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
