Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape

"The 2001 completely out-shines the 2008. At ten years of age it has a lovely wild mushroom bouquet, undergrowth, mulberry and Provencal herbs, the Mourvedre seeming to shout the loudest amongst the thirteen varieties. The palate is medium-bodied with lovely rounded tannins; notes of dark cherry, black olive and white pepper with very fine weight and persistency on the glycerin-tinged finish. Superb. Tasted November 2011." - Neal Martin

Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre

'The 2005 Cornas Domaine de St.-Pierre looked very strong with a deep ruby/purple color, sweet blackberry, powdered chalk, mineral and meaty notes, outstanding ripeness, richness, and a medium to full-bodied finish with moderately high tannins and good acidity.' - Robert Parker

Michel Chapoutier, Ermitage Le Meal

'From a warmer micro-climate, the 2006 Ermitage Le Meal blanc boasts extraordinarily intense fruit, glycerin, and tactile impression. Stones, cherries, red currants, quince, and honeyed citrus are all present in this colossal wine that is unctuously textured, very full-bodied, and super-ripe and long. It reveals less noticeable acidity than l’Oree or l’Ermite, and, like Les Granits, it is a wine that can be drunk early, but it should last for 25-30 years.' - Robert Parker

Château de Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape

"Beaucastel’s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out even better out of bottle than I predicted. An inky/ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious nose of blue and black fruits, truffles, pen ink, licorice, and meat juices as well as glorious levels of acidity and sweet tannin, buttressing the fruit’s fabulous freshness and vibrancy. This full-bodied effort still displays considerable tannin, no doubt because of the relatively high Mourvedre content. It should resolve its tannins in 2-4 years, and last for 25 or more." - Robert Parker

Michel Chapoutier, Ermitage Les Greffieux

"Ripe, voluptuous and textured, the 2007 Ermitage Les Greffieux is a sexy and delicious effort that offers serious charm. Blackberry, cassis, lavender, incense, white pepper and floral notes all emerge from the glass and it is full-bodied, nicely concentrated and mouth-filling, with a broad, supple feel. Drink it over the coming decade or so." -The Wine Advocate

Clos St-Jean, Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous

"The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous (meaning “Valley of the Fools”), which comes from a specific vineyard known as Les Combes, was cropped at extremely low yields of 20-25 hectoliters per hectare. Atypically for a Chateauneuf du Pape, it contains a high percentage of Vaccarese (10%), along with 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault. The Grenache was aged in tank, and the other varietals spent time in old small barrels or demi-muids. Explosive aromatics include spring flowers, boysenberries, blueberries, black raspberries, graphite, and charcoal. A powerful wine with great depth, full body, and an endless finish, it is exquisitely pure with not a rough edge to be found. It is the equivalent of liquid haute couture. The Musigny of the southern Rhone, it possesses extraordinary aromatics followed by a wine with the texture, length, and multilayered mouthfeel that are the stuff of dreams. Looking back at my tasting notes, the first thing I wrote was “whoa!” Deep plum/purple to the rim, this wine should evolve for 20-25 years, but it is already remarkably accessible. The vintage’s freshness as evidenced by the lack of any excessive heat and cool nights has given an aromatic singularity to the 2007s that is largely unprecedented in my tasting experience." - Robert Parker

Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul

'The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul 100% Grenache aged in tank (50%), pyramid-shaped, truncated wood cuves (40%) and barrels (10%) will not make anyone forget the 2007. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases in 2009. Already seductive and more evolved than the 2000, 2005 and 2006 were at a similar age, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals a sweet bouquet of blueberries, black raspberries, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), grilled meats, roasted herbs and spice. Medium to full-bodied with a plump, voluptuous texture, superb purity and silky tannins it should be one of the few Mon Aieuls that will be irresistible upon release. It will evolve for 12-15+ years.' - Robert Parker

Château de Beaucastel, Hommage a Jacques Perrin

'Potentially the wine of the vintage, the 2009 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin had just been bottled two weeks before my visit. A wine of extraordinary density, richness, precision and unreal flavor intensity, it reveals abundant gamey, meaty notes intermixed with smoked duck, Provencal herbs, blueberries, blackberries, kirsch and licorice. This loaded, multidimensional, massively concentrated 2009 is much softer than most Hommages. It should be drinkable in 3-4 years and keep for 30-40 years thereafter. Kudos to one of the world’s great winemaking families! ' - Robert Parker

Cote Rotie Ampuis Guigal

"More closed than when I tasted it earlier this year, the 2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is an incredible effort that’s made from 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Coming from the estate’s top sites and aged 38 months in new oak, it has no problem standing beside the top three single-vineyard releases. Crème de cassis, vanilla bean, smoked meats and licorice all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, structured Cote Rotie that needs another 5-6 years of bottle age, but will keep for 2-3 decades." - The Wine Advocate

Henri Bonneau, Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier

"A sensational vintage here, the 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier may be the finest vintage ever for this cuvée. Beautifully textured, full-bodied, thick and unctuous, it offers soaring notes of kirsch, crushed flowers, garrigue, melted licorice and spice. Softer and more rounded than the Celestins (and from when I tasted it last year), it's one sexy Châteauneuf du Pape that shows the class of this incredible vintage." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Henri Bonneau, Chateauneuf du Pape

"The classic 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape is a sexy, medium-bodied, sunny wine that’s loaded with notions of garrigue, kirsch, incense and fruit cake aromas and flavors. While I suspect it will be on a relatively fast evolutionary track, the fact is that these long elevage, which are the MO at this estate, result in a stable, age-worthy wine, even in forward, charming vintages such as 2011. Still, don’t hesitate to enjoy this in its youth." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Henri Bonneau, Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier

"The 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier is similar in style, yet just a touch more reserved and tight, with a more serious feel in its black cherry, saddle leather, pepper and meaty bouquet. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, nicely balanced and fresh, it seems much more reserved than I recall from last year, but possibly it’s just due to following the much more open, sexy, classic cuvée." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate
