Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape

"The 2001 completely out-shines the 2008. At ten years of age it has a lovely wild mushroom bouquet, undergrowth, mulberry and Provencal herbs, the Mourvedre seeming to shout the loudest amongst the thirteen varieties. The palate is medium-bodied with lovely rounded tannins; notes of dark cherry, black olive and white pepper with very fine weight and persistency on the glycerin-tinged finish. Superb. Tasted November 2011." - Neal Martin

Paul Jaboulet Aine, Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre

"The 2005 Cornas Domaine de St.-Pierre looked very strong with a deep ruby/purple color, sweet blackberry, powdered chalk, mineral and meaty notes, outstanding ripeness, richness, and a medium to full-bodied finish with moderately high tannins and good acidity." - Robert Parker

Château de Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape

"Beaucastel’s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out even better out of bottle than I predicted. An inky/ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious nose of blue and black fruits, truffles, pen ink, licorice, and meat juices as well as glorious levels of acidity and sweet tannin, buttressing the fruit’s fabulous freshness and vibrancy. This full-bodied effort still displays considerable tannin, no doubt because of the relatively high Mourvedre content. It should resolve its tannins in 2-4 years, and last for 25 or more." - Robert Parker

Michel Chapoutier, Ermitage Les Greffieux

"Ripe, voluptuous and textured, the 2007 Ermitage Les Greffieux is a sexy and delicious effort that offers serious charm. Blackberry, cassis, lavender, incense, white pepper and floral notes all emerge from the glass and it is full-bodied, nicely concentrated and mouth-filling, with a broad, supple feel. Drink it over the coming decade or so." -The Wine Advocate

Clos St-Jean, Châteauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous

"The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous (meaning “Valley of the Fools”), which comes from a specific vineyard known as Les Combes, was cropped at extremely low yields of 20-25 hectoliters per hectare. Atypically for a Chateauneuf du Pape, it contains a high percentage of Vaccarese (10%), along with 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault. The Grenache was aged in tank, and the other varietals spent time in old small barrels or demi-muids. Explosive aromatics include spring flowers, boysenberries, blueberries, black raspberries, graphite, and charcoal. A powerful wine with great depth, full body, and an endless finish, it is exquisitely pure with not a rough edge to be found. It is the equivalent of liquid haute couture. The Musigny of the southern Rhone, it possesses extraordinary aromatics followed by a wine with the texture, length, and multilayered mouthfeel that are the stuff of dreams. Looking back at my tasting notes, the first thing I wrote was “whoa!” Deep plum/purple to the rim, this wine should evolve for 20-25 years, but it is already remarkably accessible. The vintage’s freshness as evidenced by the lack of any excessive heat and cool nights has given an aromatic singularity to the 2007s that is largely unprecedented in my tasting experience." - Robert Parker

Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin

"The star of the show was the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage À Jacques Perrin, which in this vintage is a classic blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah, and the rest Counoise and Grenache. Inky colored and insanely perfumed, with to-die-for notes of lavender, Provencal herbs, roasted meats, black cherries, truffle, crème de cassis and licorice, it flows onto the palate with massive concentration, a stunning mid-palate and a thick, rich texture that never gets heavy or cumbersome. This is blockbuster stuff that just could not get any better. Drink it anytime over the coming 3-4 decades." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul

'The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul 100% Grenache aged in tank (50%), pyramid-shaped, truncated wood cuves (40%) and barrels (10%) will not make anyone forget the 2007. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases in 2009. Already seductive and more evolved than the 2000, 2005 and 2006 were at a similar age, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals a sweet bouquet of blueberries, black raspberries, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), grilled meats, roasted herbs and spice. Medium to full-bodied with a plump, voluptuous texture, superb purity and silky tannins it should be one of the few Mon Aieuls that will be irresistible upon release. It will evolve for 12-15+ years.' - Robert Parker

Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin

"Shockingly good, the 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage À Jacques Perrin offers an off-the-charts bouquet of Provençal herbs, truffle and wet-dog-like qualities intermixed with classic blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit. Massive and full-bodied on the palate, with a sheer density and decadence that’s hard to believe, this is a pedal-to-the-metal effort that has the fruit to drink beautifully today, yet the concentration, mid-palate, tannin and balance to age for 3-4 decades. Made from a blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and the rest Counoise and Grenache, this is one of the wines of the vintage." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Cote Rotie Ampuis Guigal

"More closed than when I tasted it earlier this year, the 2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is an incredible effort that’s made from 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Coming from the estate’s top sites and aged 38 months in new oak, it has no problem standing beside the top three single-vineyard releases. Crème de cassis, vanilla bean, smoked meats and licorice all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, structured Cote Rotie that needs another 5-6 years of bottle age, but will keep for 2-3 decades." - The Wine Advocate

Etienne Guigal, Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc

"The utterly perfect 2010 Hermitage Ex Voto Blanc is as good as it gets in Hermitage Blanc. Offering a crazy array of liquid rock-like minerality, graphite, flint, white currants, white peach and quince, it's layered, full-bodied, impeccably balanced and pure. It's a straight up tour de force that’s going to have decades of longevity. As always, the blend is 90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne, aged 30 months in new French oak. Hat's off to the Guigal family for this incredible wine." - Jeb Dunnuck

Henri Bonneau, Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier

"The 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier is similar in style, yet just a touch more reserved and tight, with a more serious feel in its black cherry, saddle leather, pepper and meaty bouquet. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, nicely balanced and fresh, it seems much more reserved than I recall from last year, but possibly it’s just due to following the much more open, sexy, classic cuvée." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Henri Bonneau, Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins

"Like the Marie Beurrier, the 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins shows the sunny warmth of the vintage with its killer perfume of sweet red and black fruits, pepper, smoked herbs and Provençal garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, sexy and with ripe tannin, it's not a blockbuster, but is about as Provençal as it gets. It will drink nicely right from the get-go and I suspect not shut down." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wind Advocate

Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape

"This is also a great vintage for the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape. Beautifully rich and layered, with fantastic concentration and ultra-fine tannin, it delivers impressive aromas and flavors of dark fruits, licorice, mineral, and plum. Dense and rich, yet with perfect ripeness and bright acidity, it should end up being a classic example of Beaucastel and have two decades of longevity. Drink 2016-2032". -The Wine Advocate

Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape

"I was able to taste all of the components of the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape and this is a vintage described by Marc Perrin where every variety excelled. The Grenache and Mourvèdre were the clear standouts, both possessing terrific concentration, purity of fruit and ripe tannic structure. This will certainly be an outstanding wine, and it has a touch more concentration than the 2012." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate
