Domaine Leflaive, Montrachet Grand Cru (in OWC)

"As this is almost never racked out of barrel before bottling, in contrast to the relative expressiveness of the prior wines, the nose displayed mild reduction and oak notes that precede extremely primary, indeed backward big-bodied flavors that ooze with dry extract and are rich, full and powerful with palate staining intensity and a deep, opulent and hugely long finish. A wow wine." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Leflaive, Batard Montrachet Grand Cru

"(with thanks to Dr. Reed Day). A ripe and impressively refined nose is pure, airy and cool, indeed this is unusually elegant for the appellation with its white flower, citrus, pear, menthol, white pepper and light spice hints. There is excellent concentration to the rich, full and broad-shouldered flavors that possess the usual volume and power of a classic Bâtard but do not lose any of the precision or detail on the expansive, mouth coating and hugely long finish. Note that this seems to be coming along a bit faster than my original review and thus I have reduced my initial drinking window somewhat. That said, this still needs time to develop additional depth and I would not be inclined to open this just yet." - Allen Meadows

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Batard Montrachet Grand Cru

"There is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background at present yet the nose still manages to be interesting. Otherwise there excellent richness and serious size, weight and muscle to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess exceptionally good mid-palate concentration that buffers the moderately firm acid spine on the explosively long and palate staining finish. This possesses good energy in the context of the vintage and despite the already creamy texture, this should continue to age gracefully for up to another decade in magnum format. In a word, terrific." - Allen Meadows

"As is usually the case, this offers an appreciable step up in elegance with dazzlingly pure aromas of stone, pear, acacia blossom, citrus and spice hints, all of which carry over to the wonderful and almost painfully intense medium weight flavors that display superb drive yet immaculate balance on the superbly long finish. Like the Bâtard, this is flat out stunning." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Leflaive, Bienvenues Batard Montrachet Grand Cru

"This notches up the ripeness just a touch more yet there are only the barest hints of exoticism to the peach, apricot, pear and acacia blossom aromas that display a top note of citrus zest. This is a classic Bâtard in the sense of being big, bold and powerful with imposingly-scaled flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before terminating in a massively long and borderline painfully intense finish. To be sure, this is a big wine yet it remains light on its feet with no undue sense of being top heavy. Indeed the balance is perfect though note that patience will be required. Marvelous." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Montrachet Grand Cru

"A notably ripe nose displays hints of exoticism with its dried yellow orchard fruit, pear, white peach, pekoe tea and elegant floral aromas. There is seriously impressive richness, volume, concentration and power to the muscular full-bodied flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract. Interestingly the mid-palate is almost soft yet the explosive and hugely long finish tightens up quickly as the markedly firm acid spine shapes and infuses it with a sense of underlying tension. In terms of where the 2011 Montrachet stacks up relative to prior vintages of this storied wine, I would describe it was one of the more elegant examples that combines finesse with power. The typical Domaine's Montrachet requires 12 to 15 years to be at its peak yet the 2011 version is probably more in the 10 to 12 year range and thus should arrive at its peak a few years earlier than normal." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Antoine Jobard, Meursault Blagny 1er Cru

"This is riper than it usually is with soft citrus blossom and pear aromas that are trimmed in the barest hints of exotic yellow fruit. Despite the ripeness the significant altitude of the vineyard permits the middle weight flavors to retain a fine sense of energy that continues on to the textured, intense and mineral-inflected finish. This is really very good and should reward mid-term cellaring." - Allen Meadows- Burghound

Bouchard Pere et Fils, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru

"There is enough reduction present to knock down the expressiveness of what appears to be a very ripe nose of apple and floral aromas. The broad-shouldered flavors are impressively rich, full-bodied and well-detailed with a taut muscularity on the highly persistent and driving finish that is blessed with so much dry extract that is seems almost chewy. Despite the imposing size and weight of this classically styled effort the balance is impeccable and the length is genuinely stunning." - Allen Meadows

Joseph Drouhin, Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres

"A difficult nose is presently composed of sulfur, reduction and enough wood to be called generous. By contrast there is a silky mouth feel and the hallmark minerality on the elegant and beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess a distinct saline character on the clean, long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This will need a few years to harmonize but the underlying material is first rate and thus this transformation should occur assuming that the buyer has the patience to wait for a few years first." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

"A recent sulfur addition rendered this impossible to read aromatically though the palate impression didn't seem to suffer as the medium-bodied flavors are round and rich to the point of opulence. Curiously this is softer than the Meix Chavaux yet the acidity is not as ripe and as the description suggests this is awkward and while it will probably harmonize before it's bottled that is not a certainty." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Bouchard Pere et Fils, Montrachet Grand Cru

"This is still showing some post-bottling sulfur and not surprisingly the nose is reduced. If for some reason you're tempted to try a bottle in the next year I would strongly suggest that this be decanted for 30 minutes first. Otherwise there is excellent intensity, muscle and power to the concentrated, mineral-driven and broad-shouldered flavors that already display superb complexity and simply huge length. At the same time this is presently very tight and the austerity of the linear finish confirms that this is very likely to require 12 to 15 years to realize its full potential." - Allen Meadows

Here the more expressive nose is a bit less elegant but even more complex with its otherwise similar nose that even displays an unusual hint of orange peel. There is real volume and power to the big-bodied, concentrated and entirely serious big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with an abundance of dry extract before culminating in a driving and hugely long finale. This isn't quite as tight as the BBM but it too should age gracefully for many years to come yet my sense is that it will be approachable after only 5 to 7 years." - Allen Meadows

"Pale greenish-yellow color. Precise aromas of yellow fruits, spearmint and white flowers, with nicely integrated oak tones. Broader and more powerful in the mouth than the Bienvenues, showing better integration of oak. The yellow fruit flavors carry through to a more phenolic, distinctly tongue-dusting finish. Some unabsorbed CO2 gives this wine a firm edge. (The young Corton-Charlemagne, from fruit picked at the end of the harvest, boasts terrific depth of flavor and mineral richness but was hard to taste owing to its remaining malic acidity.)" - Stephen Tanzer
