Biodynamic wine is is like organic, but with a layer of (bizarre) philosophy/mysticism on top. Briefly, the idea is that the ecosystem must operate in healthy harmony. In order to promote balance between the elements of the ecosystem, the farmer will apply a variety of ‘preparations’ that are supposed to improve the life and health of the soil. These are homeopathic and made using a ‘dynamiser’ which stirs the liquid in order to ‘energise’ and ‘activate’ the treatment. Admittedly, this is all rather odd, but the system does (coincidentally perhaps) also specify a lot of good common sense practices which result in healthier grapes and better wine.
