CHâTEAU HOURTIN-DUCASSE 2004
TASTING NOTES
Hourtin Ducasse have vines just over the border from Pauillac and the style reflects the best wines of that appellation. The vines are cropped to low levels and extraction is managed very carefully. The 2004 is drinking beautifully and really reflects how charming and undervalued this vintage can be.
This has proved an immensely popular wine for our restaurant team and you can see why. Accesible, complex Bordeaux for a superb price.
PRODUCER NOTES
The Château Hourtin-Ducasse is located in Saint-Sauveur, a district bordering that of Pauillac. It has been producing wine with the bourgeois cru classification since 1932. Two of the chateau’s previous owners from the 18th and 19th centuries, Mr. Hourtin and Mr. Ducasse, gave it its name. Its current owners, the Marengo family, acquired the chateau in 1976.
The Marengo vineyards spread across 30 hectares, with 25 hectares of vines aged on average 15 to 20 years. The soil is gravel and silica and the plantings are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are fermented in stainless steel vats and then aged in one- or two-year-old barrels.
