CHATEAU SUBILAUX 2007
TASTING NOTES
100% Merlot from 40 year old vines centred just outside the St-Emillion appellation. Not much oak is used here, as the aim is to create a juicy, complex, early drinking wine, ideal for all social occasions. Great value.
PRODUCER NOTES
Chateau Subilaux is a great example of what can be achieved within the humble AC Bordeaux classification when a dedicated and quality minded staff team is involved. This 8 hectare estate is located just outside the Cotes de Bourg region and is the family estate of Herge Lardière, whose son Christophe’s day job is managing the vineyards at the highly regarded Chateau Valandraud. With him tending the vineyards and the Valandraud connection being completed by Christophe’s boss Jean-Luc Thunevin over-seeing much of the wine-making the focus on quality becomes clear. Work includes such measures as green-harvesting and de-budding, measures more commonly associated with Cru Classe than AC Bordeaux wines.
The 2007 Subilaux consists of a blend of 90% Merlot , 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc and mixes ripe black fruits with smooth tannins to give a modern, easy-drinking Bordeaux. The wine is aged in a mix stainless steel and cement to ensure that the fruit takes centre stage. Given the inherent difficulties that were faced during the 2007 vintage, we feel the wine is really impressive and eagerly await our chance to taste the subsequent vintages.
