TASTING NOTES
Not only is Louis Roederer's Cristal now established as one of the most fashionable and highly sought-after of all Champagne brands, it also has a long and distinguished history, being widely regarded as the first prestige cuvée. In 1876 Tsar Alexander II of Russia, fearing that a bomb hidden behind the conventional green glass of a Champagne bottle might be used to assassinate him, ordered a Champagne to be produced in a clear glass bottle and without the traditional bell-shaped base. In order to ensure that this bottle shape was able to cope with the pressure, it had to be manufactured from lead crystal, and hence became known as Cristal. The wine itself is full-bodied and powerful but balanced, fully deserving of its stellar reputation. If stored correctly the wines develop an extraordinary complexity over many years. The difficulty is in persuading anybody to resist temptation and keep it that long.
PRODUCER NOTES
Louis Roederer is not just about Cristal – although that is one of the greatest wines in Champagne, if you can keep it long enough to let it develop – they are great producers across the range. The Brut Premier is one of the most consistent and high-quality NVs on the market, thanks to Roederer’s great vineyard holdings and unrivalled collection of reserve wines. You can’t go far wrong with the rosé, blanc de blancs, or any of the vintage wines either.
