Reserva wines are, in our experience, often better than their more expensive Gran Reserva siblings, because they strike the right balance between oak and fruit more consistently. This wine is a perfect example of that. It is traditional Rioja at its best, made with the utmost care and attention to detail by a talented winemaker at the top of his game. In the glass it shows a developed nose of blackcurrant, cherry, tobacco and leather, and is exceptionally smooth, elegant and satisfying on the palate. This is not a big blockbuster wine, and that’s a good thing. It is light on its feet, wonderfully balanced and refreshing to drink. At this price, it offers truly spectacular value.

A bone fide Reserva Rioja, the wine is made from old vine Tempranillo by third-generation winemaker Raimundo Abando at his impeccably maintained winery in Rioja Alavesa. The low-yielding 70 year-old vines are dry-farmed (i.e. no irrigation takes place) and the grapes fermented with natural yeast. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels for 24 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered to retain its character and flavour.

PRODUCER NOTES

Raimundo Abando at Las Orcas is a third-generation winemaker who runs his winery in Rioja Alavesa to exceptionally high standards. In 2000 investment was made to modernise the Bodega and the wines haven't looked back. Heavily reliant on old vine Tempranillo, the wines are dry farmed and fermented with natural yeasts. All of the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered and are matured in French oak.
