CôTES DU RHôNE 2010, DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO

'By far the best Côtes-du-Rhône I have tasted from the Usseglios, this blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre, from a vineyard just outside of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern sector, has a dark ruby/purple color, more structure as well as more fruit and extract than usual, and a deep, Provençal nose of lavender, liquorice, roasted herbs and lots of black cherry and blueberry fruit ... should drink nicely for 3-4 years ... 90 Points'
The Wine Advocate
'An excellent Côtes du Rhône bottle from one of its best producers, made using mainly Grenache grapes grown close to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape area. Gorgeous herbal and floral aromas, a dark-purple colour and deep, luscious fruit flavours, a touch of pepper and plenty of backbone. Just the ticket to warm a winter's evening and wash down some confit-duck legs or a game casserole.'

Francis Usseglio left Italy in 1931 to work at Chateauneuf du Pape in France. He humbly learned from local winegrowers and developed a passion for wine. In 1948, after the war, he decided to acquire his own property and had two sons - Pierre and Raymond. Pierre Usseglio inherited his father's property and Raymond established another estate. Today the third generation is in charge. The sons of Pierre Usseglio, Jean-Pierre and Thierry run Domaine Pierre Usseglio and Stephanie runs Domaine Raymond Usseglio.
The Estate covers 21 hectares divided in 15 different parcels in the appellation. Half of the vines are about 60 years old and the rest has an average age of 30 years old. Grenache is the main grape.
Thierry and Jean-Pierre have won high praises for their top wines, which are usually robust, full bodied and richly textured, with notes of spicy cherries, earth, pepper and black raspberry.
