WINES FROM CHâTEAU HOURTIN-DUCASSE
Château Hourtin-Ducasse dates from the 18th century and is located in Saint-Sauveur, a district bordering Pauillac. It has been producing Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux since 1932. Two of the Château's previous owners from the 18th and 19th centuries, Mr. Hourtin and Mr. Ducasse, gave it its name.
The vineyards are spread across 30 hectares, with 25 hectares of vines between 25 and 30 years old. The soil is gravel and silica and the plantings are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are fermented in stainless steel vats and then aged in one or two year-old oak barrels.
Elegance and balance are at the forefront here; the focus on capturing the purity of the fruit. The vineyard applies elements of organic and even biodynamic philosophy whilst not slavishly following the rules if they are inappropriate. In the winery, the fruit remains the priority with the oaking regime varying each year to match the harvest. The wines are then blind blended, looking to find the most harmonious balance without sticking to formula.
