WINES FROM CHâTEAU MARGAUX

Margaux is, in top vintages at least, the most attractive, fine, elegant and sophisticated of all the first growths. Like Lafite, its hallmark is not power and punch, but more balance, style and perfume. The Château itself is no less remarkable, a beautiful mansion set in a magnificent estate with avenues of plane trees leading through it. Margaux truly is wine aristocracy. Stephen Brook describes how ‘even at its mightiest, there is a restraining elegance and grace to the wine. It’s never brash, it’s hardly ever burly, but equally it doesn’t lack virility and strength. It’s like a clipper in full sail drawing closer and gaining in amplitude as it moves deftly across the seas. One marvels at its beauty rather than at its power.’ Like all the First Growths, it ages magnificently.
