TASTING NOTES
'Lots of currant and berry aromas and flavours. Full-bodied, with compacted fruit and a silky tannin structure. Best of Haut-Bages-Libéral ever. Best after 2009 ... 92 points'
Wine Spectator
The 2000 vintage in Bordeaux will be remembered as one of the best in decades. Optimum conditions led to tannic, full yet balanced wines with lots of fresh fruit. The 2000 is deep red in colour, with black fruits and cedar on the nose In the mouth it's powerful yet elegant.
PRODUCER NOTES
The vineyards of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral are situated in the Bordeaux commune of Pauillac, with the largest one lying across the road from Château Latour.
The Merlaut family invested heavily here after taking over in the 1970’s, and it’s now run by Jacques Merlaut’s granddaughter, Claire Villars Lurton, who took over at the age of just 25. Her presence has been revitalising and many improvements have been made, including a longer maceration period and malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, designed to soften the wines and make them rounder.
Pauillac’s terroir is world famous, with the micro-climate and soils providing the wines with power and mineral characteristics. Haut-Bages-Libéral wines are gutsy, tannic and long-lived. As is the norm for the left bank, they are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and some Petit Verdot.
Haut-Bages-Libéral is one of those fifth growth Pauillac wines which offers good value to those in the know.
