"Cheval Blanc is the Mouton of St-Emilion: the blockbuster. The 1947 is a legend, a wine of heroic style and proportions, with the combined qualities of claret, port, sculpture, and Hermès or Gucci - or is this lèse-majesté? The '61 is only just ready; a tough piece of beef that needed to marinate for years. Not all vintages are so awe-inspiring: but '75, '82, '83, '89, '90, '95 and '98 are in the grandest tradition."

"Cheval Blanc often does not show well young. I am not sure why… At primeur tastings in particular, when colleagues all around me are swooning, I sometimes find myself wondering what the fuss is about. Five or ten years later I start swooning myself. A great Cheval Blanc is about perfume and texture. It can be opulent and powerful, but not always. It can have an intense delicacy that miraculously does not impair the wine's ability to age majestically. For me Cheval Blanc is the most mysterious of the First Growths, the wine I find hardest to pin down. Yet at its best, it is incomparable."
