PRODUCER NOTES
Haut-Brion is the odd man out, the outsider – the only one of the five First Growths to be outside the Médoc. And yet, it is the oldest Château to be known by name (first recorded in the late 17th century) and for most of the next 200 years it was at the top of every connoisseur’s list of great wines. It deserves that same accolade today. Its extraordinary, thirty-foot deep gravel soils yield a wine whose defining characteristic is balance, as Hugh Johnson puts it, ‘between strength and finesse, firmness and sweetness.’ He adds, ‘I shall never forget an Impériale of the 1899 – the most spellbinding claret I have ever drunk.’ This perfectly illustrates the other great characteristic of the wine – its need for bottle age. Given time, it becomes beautifully harmonious, a true expression of a great terroir and a prestigious history.
