PRODUCER NOTES
Mouton-Rothschild has always been highly regarded, but in the twentieth century it underwent a transformation unique among all of Bordeaux, orchestrated brilliantly by Baron Philippe de Rothschild who took it over in 1922 in a state of neglect. He spent the next 50 years in an unceasing search for perfection, presiding over great innovations both in the winery and outside it – famously commissioning a different artist to produce a label each year, making the bottles themselves collectors items. In 1973 he achieved his goal – Mouton was promoted from Second to First Growth, the only change ever made to the 1855 classification. The style has always been closer to Latour than Lafite – strong, muscular and powerful, a great and pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon’s intense blackcurrant flavour. Its ageing potential is extraordinary. Broadbent believes the 1945, reputedly one of the greatest wines ever produced, still has another half-century ahead of it.
