PRODUCER NOTES
Started initially by Felix Sorrel in 1927, this Domaine is known to be the finest source of artisanal and traditionally made Hermitage wines. Some of the vines in this Estate are over 60 years of age and with extremely low yields. Marc still uses traditional methods of wine making such as hand harvesting and horses in his vineyard. Late picking of the grapes is practiced to produce his Hermitages due to his belief that riper grapes make richer Hermitages. He rarely de-stems, he doesn't use new oak and his wines are often aged for up to two years before bottling. Wines are never filtered or fined to preserve flavours and intensity.
2009 was a great vintage for Sorrel and Hermitage, and when we tasted them they proved flat-out spectacular. Both the red and white Crozes were on superb form. Their style is elegant and relatively restrained, but there is excellent body and weight underpinning this charm.
The two white Hermitages could be the best yet produced. The regular cuvée is dense, floral and with immediate appeal. The Rocoules, made from the famous site on the granite hill of Hermitage, is immense, loaded with structure, citrus and floral notes and a profound finish. The red Hermitage shows an extra dimension of power relative to previous vintages with quite an atypically forward, fruit driven style for the domaine.
