TASTING NOTES
'Steve Edmunds is one of the iconoclasts of California, dedicated to gentle, insightful wines rather than blockbusters. He is also one of the few American winemakers who seek out gamay, the grape of Beaujolais, which he gets from El Dorado County high in the California gold country. The 2009 is spicy, fruity, light and inviting.'
Eric Asimov
New York Times
Bone-Jolly from Edmunds-St-John is made from a small planting of Gamay high in the Sierra Foothills, (over 3000 feet above sea level). The vibrancy, fruit and freshness of this beautiful wine are striking and provide ample evidence that California can produce wines of complexity, finesse, joy and great value.
In Steve's words: "Life is so serious, pleasures hard won. In perfect balance, a man with life's weight on his shoulders smells a bouquet of violets and his spirit soars out over this weary world. A Jolly-Ness ignites in his bones and he laughs in the face of death"'

PRODUCER NOTES
Steve Edmunds isn’t your average winemaker. He doesn’t own a vineyard, or even a winery! Instead he travels across Northern California, hand selecting the best grapes from the most appropriate locations.
Steve started Edmunds St John in 1985, focusing on the typical Rhone grapes of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, when growing anything other than Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Chardonnay was unheard of in California. He was one of the first winemakers to be dubbed part of the 'Rhone Rangers'.
Production is tiny. His first wine was made in a small rented out warehouse. Today his wines are made in the Audubon Cellars in Berkley.
Steve doesn’t believe in introducing any new flavours such as oak, instead letting the natural flavours of the grapes shine through. The hallmarks of their wines are balance, nuance and elegance; ‘wines that express their origins in place and time, wines through which the earth speaks in a clear and strong voice’.
‘If I can offer someone a wine that is thrilling to smell, that is unforgettable to taste... If that response is forthcoming, I will have done my job.’
