TASTING NOTES

"From quite frankly the most idiosyncratic and downright crazy winemaker I have ever met (Think wall-full of Lady Gaga photo's and Frank Sinatra playing to keep the barrels company at night) comes this superb Syrah from three vineyards in the Paso Robles area. At 15% alcohol the wine never feels unbalanced and it retains tons of complexity and Syrah character. One of the top importers in America called the proprietor, Tim Spear 'The Giuseppe Quintarelli of California Syrah' and I think he was about spot on." - Joe Gilmour, retail manager.

"You can ask anyone in the shop, I'm really not a New World fan (and I do get a fair bit stick for it!) so for me to say that this is the best wine I've drunk this year is as bold a statement as it gets. I just love it. It's beautifully ripe and juicy on the mid-palate but doesn't lack the savoury edge that you'd expect in a Syrah at that price. It's got weight, complexity and length to spare but none of this over ripe, over worked, over oaked side that so often characterises wines from the New World.
It is often said that the line between genius and madness can be blurred at times, but in Team Spear's case there's no blur, there's no line, there's nothing apart from pure madness. On the way to the winery, Joe our shop manager was very excited as he'd heard some great things about the wine. But doubts started creeping in as he walked into a room filled with pictures of Lady Gaga on the walls! After offering Joe a whisky (great warm up to a wine tasting!), the winemaker confessed that it was his dream to craft a wine that Lady Gaga would love, which did little to comfort him. Here's one of the many things he has to say about the Petite Rousse Syrah 2006: "as a result of endless hours of puccini's "la bohème" serenading the wine in the cellar, each bottle has been infused with 19th century parisian romance.
