ROCKS AND GRAVEL 2010, EDMUNDS ST. JOHN

TASTING NOTES
Bright purple. Big and round and smooth. Not expensive for a CA wine. A lot of oomph.
Jancis Robinson
Flavors of baked plum, black raspberries, cherries, white pepper, and some floral/violet notes. Lovely fresh nose. Well balanced tannins and acidity, with a wonderful hint of spice on the end and good length.
PRODUCER NOTES
Steve Edmunds isn’t your average winemaker. He doesn’t own a vineyard, or even a winery! Instead he travels across Northern California, hand selecting the best grapes from the most appropriate locations.
Steve started Edmunds St John in 1985, focusing on the typical Rhone grapes of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, when growing anything other than Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Chardonnay was unheard of in California. He was one of the first winemakers to be dubbed part of the 'Rhone Rangers'.
Production is tiny. His first wine was made in a small rented out warehouse. Today his wines are made in the Audubon Cellars in Berkley.
Steve doesn’t believe in introducing any new flavours such as oak, instead letting the natural flavours of the grapes shine through. The hallmarks of their wines are balance, nuance and elegance; ‘wines that express their origins in place and time, wines through which the earth speaks in a clear and strong voice’.
‘If I can offer someone a wine that is thrilling to smell, that is unforgettable to taste... If that response is forthcoming, I will have done my job.’
