PRODUCER NOTES
Domaine Laporte is a small producer of high-quality, hand-crafted wines. It was founded in 1850 in the heart of the prestigious Sancerre appellation and now numbers 20 hectares of prime vineyards in Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. Sitting on the edge of a valley this unique geological formation is divided into two distinct soil types, with limestone hills on one side of the valley and flint hills on the opposite side. Grapes grown on each side of the valley are vinified according to the kind of soil to emphasise the terroir rather than the wine-making style.
Les Grandmontains is grown on clay and limestone and fermented in stainless steel tanks, giving a wine of ripe fruit, silky structure and a mentholated freshness. Le Rochoy is grown on an especially flinty hillside and has a more delicate, mineral persona. Domaine Laporte’s top wine, La Comtesse, comes from the slopes of the Côte des Monts Damnés, Sancerre’s finest terroir. The resulting wine is masculine, well structured and will improve for many years in the bottle. The ripe Pinot Noir grapes of Les Royaux are hand-picked to give careful selection, creating an expansive nose of small red berries and an intense flavour evoking Morello cherry, blackberry and strawberry.
