TASTING NOTES

'Those of you who tasted his top cuvée 'Virgile Blanc' will know what Virgile Joly is capable of. He is one of the rising stars of the 'Terrasses du Larzac' and his Saturnes Blanc is absolutely beautiful. Made of 100% Grenache blanc grown organically around the town of St Saturnin between 100 and 400m high, it spends eight months in cuves after fermentation. The nose is just gorgeous with peaches, acacia and something quite grassy and nutty around the edges. The palate is full and silky with a brisk acidity that brings everything to life on a long finish full of minerality. Great stuff!'

PRODUCER NOTES

Virgile Joly's grandfather was a wine-maker, and after growing up in the Rhône Valley his fate was sealed. After some time working for other wine makers in France and Chile, he decided to set up on his own in 2000. By 2001 he had converted to certified organic methods, and he's now held in very high esteem by his peers in the Languedoc, who constantly seek his advice and even made him chairman of the committee behind Millésime Bio, Europe’s biggest and most influential annual organic wine fair.

The grapes that Virgile grows are Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted, and the harvest date changes each year, depending on the maturity of the grapes, sugar levels, acidity and tannins. Virgile's wife Magdalena works alongside him, helping him make and market his premium organic wines.
