VIñA GRAVONIA' CRIANZA BLANCO RIOJA 2002, LOPEZ DE HEREDIA

Stunning, understated nose with subtle honeysuckle and beeswax aromas ... The palate is crisp and taut on the entry with understated nougat and bitter lemon notes. It is fresh and elegant on the finish that offers hazelnut, smoke and a cheeky scent of pumpkin, all lingering on the aftertaste ... 91 points'
Incredible white Rioja. Peach, apricot, honey, citrus and a hint of petrol on the nose. Silky, waxy-like texture with great acidity. Lot of complexity on the palate: lemon peel, apricot and a slight oxidative quality giving it a wonderful nuttiness and a long finish.
For more than 130 years, three generations of the López de Heredia family have been producing exceptional wines in Rioja. Rafael López de Heredia founded the company in the late nineteenth century and quickly became known for unique wines of outstanding quality.
Today, the winery is run by Rafael’s great-granddaughter, Maria José López de Heredia, helped by her sister Mercedes, brother Julio and father Pedro. Vineyard care is a top priority for this family, grapes are scrupulously selected, and wines are aged in oak barrels underground, and later in bottle.
The region may be known for red wine, but Lopez de Heredia’s white Riojas are stunning. They’re known to oak-age their whites for as long as their reds, resulting in incredible flavours and scents of spice, almonds, vanilla and walnuts.
An unusual trait about López de Heredia is that they blend their vintages as much as is legally allowed, in order to avoid vintage variation. Their aim is to release wines of consistent quality and to maintain a house style, in much the same way that the big Champagne houses do.
