Domaine Peyre Rose, Clos des Cistes

'The Peyre Rose 2002 Coteaux du Languedoc Clos des Cistes smells of cherry, plum, roasted meat, and pungent herbs. With strikingly pronounced iodine, brine, and wet stone emerging along with distilled pit fruits and deep meatiness on the palate, this presents a firm impression of underlying extract and remarkably fresh fruit for a late-bottled wine of its age. At the same time, there is glycerin to lend a soothing texture and toasted pecan and brown spices introduce a suggestion of sweetness even as the wine finishes blazingly bright. This is a wine that one imagines will remain dynamic, although more harmony may emerge in the course of 3-5 years. A bottle that had been opened for a day was more pronouncedly mineral and slightly sparer, but otherwise surprisingly little-evolved. ' - Wine Advocate

Domaine Peyre Rose, Clos Syrah Leone

'The 2002 Coteaux du Languedoc Clos Syrah Leone displays as usual a more delicate style than the corresponding Clos des Ciste. Black raspberry in fresh and distilled form, black tea, lavender, and black truffle scent the nose, leading to a supple yet bright palate, featuring low-toned woodsy, fungal, and game notes. Black olive and further bitter-sweet herbal notes rise on the palate. This has a spare beauty, refinement of texture, and fascinating finishing complexity. I would opt for enjoying it over the next 2-3 years rather than filing it away to compete with the historically top contenders in the Peyre Rose Pantheon.' - Wine Advocate

Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvée de Mon Aieul'

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul, which spends 90% of its time in tank and 10% in old barrels, has turned out even better in bottle than it performed from cask. Basically 100% Grenache in 2004, this is clearly better than the 1999, which I own and drink frequently. It exhibits a deep ruby purple color and a wonderful sweet nose of black cherry, raspberry, licorice, spice box, and roasted herbs. Voluminous for a 2004, with full body, beautiful texture, a long, heady finish, and loads of fruit, glycerin, and decent acidity, this wine should drink beautifully for 12-15+ years. There was no 2004 Reserve des Deux Freres as all of that wine was put into the Mon Aieul - Robert Parker

Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

'The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault) is another top-notch effort. The wine is aged in tank (60%), foudre (30%) and 1- to 4-year-old small barrels (10%). Sweet raspberry, black currant, and cherry fruit intermixed with licorice, lavender and tobacco leaf jump from the glass of this perfumed 2009. With outstanding ripeness, a plush, evolved mouthfeel and sweet tannins, this beauty is already complex and delicious. It should age well for 7-8 years.' - Robert Parker

Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvée de Mon Aieul'

'The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul 100% Grenache aged in tank (50%), pyramid-shaped, truncated wood cuves (40%) and barrels (10%) will not make anyone forget the 2007. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases in 2009. Already seductive and more evolved than the 2000, 2005 and 2006 were at a similar age, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals a sweet bouquet of blueberries, black raspberries, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), grilled meats, roasted herbs and spice. Medium to full-bodied with a plump, voluptuous texture, superb purity and silky tannins it should be one of the few Mon Aieuls that will be irresistible upon release. It will evolve for 12-15+ years.' - Robert Parker

Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'Deux Freres'

'The limited production 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres (400 cases) is 100% Grenache aged 40% in old barrels, 30% in tank, and 30% in new oak casks. A spicy, full-bodied, powerful effort, it is built for 20+ years of cellaring. The color is a saturated ruby/purple and the nose offers up scents of camphor, toast, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, licorice, truffle and spice box. The wine’s concentration and superb intensity absorb the oak in a shockingly easy fashion. This classic, massive, rich Chateauneuf du Pape needs 2-4 years of bottle age and should drink well over the following two decades.' - Robert Parker

Domaine Trimbach, Riesling Clos St Hune

"Fresh lime, yellow plum, musk, and intimations of chalk dust in the nose of Trimbach’s 2006 Riesling Clos Ste-Hune usher in a strikingly fresh, firm palate possessed of meat stock and game-like animal undertones. This bottling of barely over 12.5% in alcohol is much more tightly-stitched than the corresponding Frederic Emile, and finishes with penetrating, bright length, combined with overtly crushed stone minerality. No Alsace 2006 of my experience can top this for focus, clarity, or long-term (I would estimate 12-15 years’) aging potential, although the Frederic Emile is in its very different way more striking, as well as more fun to drink now." - Wine Advocate

Dominio de Pingus, Pingus (non OWC)

'A freak, the 2000 Pingus is an exaggerated, extravagantly rich effort boasting an inky/purple color along with a sumptuous perfume of beef blood, lavender, Provencal herbs, ground pepper, melted licorice, and oodles of blackberry and creme de cassis-like fruit. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and smoky, with great intensity, and an unctuously-textured, full-throttle finish, it should drink well for 15-20 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. Dominio de Pingus

'The opaque ruby/purple-colored, firmly-structured 2001 Pingus is more closed and backward than the extravagantly rich, flamboyant 2000. It offers great fruit on the attack along with huge body, and notes of grilled meats intermixed with Provencal herbs, pepper, spice box, cigar smoke, and copious quantities of barbecue smoke-infused blackberry and cassis flavors. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2028.' - Pingus
