Luciano Sandrone, Barolo Le Vigne

Sandrone’s 2008 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of breathtaking textural finesse and elegance. Nothing really stands out, so phenomenal is the wine’s balance and sense of harmony. This is the kind of wine that is easy to overlook because it doesn’t ask for attention and isn’t showy. Instead, everything is simply in the right place. The finest, most silky of tannins support a core of sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which are woven together with total refinement. The eternal, nuanced finish bodes very well for the future. This is a dazzling effort from Luciano and Luca Sandrone. Le Vigne is made from parcels in Vignane, Ceretta, Conterni and Merli. In 2008 there is a little less Vignane as part of the vineyard was hit by hail. There is little question that the blending of fruit from several sites was a huge advantage in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028 - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate

L`Aventure, Estate Cuvée

'The 2007 Estate Cuvee (44% Syrah, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 19% Petit Verdot) is much bigger and denser than its 2008 counterpart, despite the fact that it is only 15.4% alcohol, compared to the 2008's 15.9%. Full-bodied with abundant notes of creme de cassis, blackberries, smoke, graphite, and charcoal, this dense, layered, beautifully textured effort will benefit from another 1-2 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 10-15+ years.' - Robert Parker

Marc Colin, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Champs Gain'

'An exceptionally ripe though not exotic nose of mostly yellow orchard fruit also evidences hints of sulfur and oak toast. Marc Colin, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Champs Gain'

Here the expressive nose is relatively similar to that of the Chenevottes but with the addition of a distinct, indeed almost pungent floral character. The attractively rich and very round flavors possess an abundance of mouth coating extract that confers a suave texture to the beautifully intense, balanced and impressively persistent finish. This is really very good and I very much like the underlying tension - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Marchesi Antinori, Solaia (Not OC)

"The 1990 Solaia is slightly more concentrated than the 1990 Tignanello, with a saturated purple color, and a classic, international nose of cassis, lead pencil, vanillin, and smoke. It is gorgeously rich, with a fat, unctuous texture, and a long, highly extracted finish. Well-balanced and already delicious, it remains unevolved and is potentially a 12-20 year wine. In the context of recent Solaias, I would rate it a worthy competitor to the other-worldly 1985. It is certainly much more opulent, with sweeter, jammier, richer fruit than the 1988 (most recently rated 88 points)." Robert Parker

Marchesi Antinori, Tignanello

The 2009 Tignanello is quite beautiful. Cedar, graphite, sweet herbs, licorice and leather add complexity to a core of highly expressive red fruits. The 2009 impresses for its energy, drive and focus. Today, the 2009 comes across as slightly understated relative to many recent vintages, especially 2007 and 2008. There is a silkiness and polish that is reminiscent of the 2004. Tignanello is 75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc from vineyards in San Casciano Val di Pesa, one of the most evocative hillsides in all of Italy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. The Wine Advocate.

Marchesi Antinori, Solaia

'The 2004 Solaia is breathtaking, as it so often is. Soaring aromatics lead to a sweet, layered expression of dark fruit. The wine possesses super clarity and precision with a gorgeous inner tension that carries all the way through to the long finish. The tannins remain incredibly finessed and silky. This is a more restrained, elegant style than the full-throttle 2001. 2004 is the first vintage in which the component wines were aged separately, rather than together, as had been the custom in previous vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.' - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate

Marchesi Antinori, Solaia

'The 2005 Solaia is elegant and refined, yet it remains incredibly primary. Still, it is hard not to admire the wine’s layered expression of blue and black fruits. The oak remains prominent, but I am confident the wine will come together with bottle age. The Solaia vineyard is one of the most unique terroirs in Italy, and the wine has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle, even in smaller vintages. It will be fascinating to follow this Solaia as it matures. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2023.' - Antonio Galloni

Michel Chapoutier, Ermitage 'Le Pavillon'

"All of the single vineyard Ermitages turned out as good as I had hoped, possibly even better. In short they are among the strongest wines one could hope for in this vintage. The 2004 Ermitage Le Pavillon is outstanding, but certainly not one of the most compelling wines Michel Chapoutier has made. It is dense, dark ruby/purple, and seems more austere and backward than the Le Meal, but I still think these are 15- to 20-year wines as opposed to the normal 50+ that the top vintages of these single vineyard Ermitages produce. Dense with black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, sweet blackberries, and white chocolate, this is an elegant, mid-weight Pavillon that should be drinking well in about 5-6 years and last 15-20. Michel Chapoutier, Ermitage 'Le Meal'

'From a warmer micro-climate, the 2006 Ermitage Le Meal blanc boasts extraordinarily intense fruit, glycerin, and tactile impression. Stones, cherries, red currants, quince, and honeyed citrus are all present in this colossal wine that is unctuously textured, very full-bodied, and super-ripe and long. It reveals less noticeable acidity than l’Oree or l’Ermite, and, like Les Granits, it is a wine that can be drunk early, but it should last for 25-30 years.' - Robert Parker

Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon 'David Lynch'

'Unfortunately there is only one new release from Dom Perignon this year. The 2003 is one of the most unusual Dom Perignons I have ever tasted, going back to 1952. Readers will remember that 2003 was a torrid vintage across northern Europe, especially during the critical month of August, when temperatures remained very hot for well over a month. The harvest was the earliest on record, until 2011, that is. I suppose its not that surprising Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy chose to make a 2003 Dom Perignon, given his penchant for risk-taking, an approach that has yielded so many memorable wines that stretch the perception of what big brand Champagne is and can be. The 2003 Dom Perignon is a big, broad shouldered wine. It does not have the seductiveness of the 2000, nor the power of the 2002. It is instead very much its own wine. In 2003 Geoffroy elected to use more Pinot Noir than is typically the case, and that comes through in the wine’s breath and volume. The 2003 is a big, powerful Champagne that will require quite a bit of time to shed some of its baby fat. The trademark textural finesse is there, though. I expect the 2003 to be a highly divisive Champagne because of its extreme personality, but then again, many of the world’s legendary wines were made from vintages considered freakish at the time. The 2003 is an atypically, rich, powerful, vinous Dom Perignon loaded with fruit, structure and personality. It is not for the timid, but rather it is a wine for those who can be patient. No one has a crystal ball, but personally I will not be surprised if in 20 years’ time the 2003 is considered an iconic Champagne. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038. ' - Wine Advocate

'The Mount Eden 2008 Chardonnay Estate is made from the estate’s best barrels, with the aim of producing a wine that can age 20 years. That shouldn’t be a problem for the 2008. Pascal Cotat, Sancerre 'Les Monts Damnes'

'Narcissus, fresh lemon, nettle, and intimations of chalk in the nose of Pascal Cotat’s 2008 Sancerre Les Monts Damnes lead to bright, mouth-watering, practically spine-tingling and yet extract rich and substantial palate. Finishing with brash citricity, bitter hints of huckleberry and lemon pip, and minerality of a sort you lick your lips in vain to remove, this handsomely lean, muscular Monts Damnes (truly dry, at 2 grams residual sugar) should prove fascinating and versatile over the coming 4-6 years.' - Wine Advocate

Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Hermitage 'La Chapelle'

'The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexy and opulent. I had the 1990 at the Jaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three months ago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has garnered. The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper and grilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such a mammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture that have to be tasted to be believed. Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 La Chapelle is lovely to drink, although it will be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should age for 35-40+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050.' - Robert Parker
