Antica Terra, Antica Terra Pinot Noir Botanica

'The 2009 Botanica surrenders greater aromatic complexity, is richer and more extracted than the Antica Terra cuvee, and has outstanding volume and length. This nicely proportioned Pinot Noir will benefit from 1-2 years of additional cellaring, an unusual characteristic for most 2009s. ' - Wine Advocate

Sine Qua Non, Upside Down Grenache

'2009 Grenache Upside Down: There will be 1050 cases of this blend of 84% Grenache, 11% Syrah and the reappearance of a little Mourvedre (5%). Seventy-two percent came from the 11 Confessions estate vineyard, 22% from the Cumulus estate vineyard (the source for Next of Kyn) and the balance from the Bien Nacido Vineyard. It is a big wine at 15.7% alcohol and seems to show surprising amounts of tree bark and mushroom notes for the tiny quantity of Mourvedre. It is structured, dense, quite closed, and (obviously, this being a barrel sample) not as exciting as the wines tend to be from bottle. It is a more earthy, French style of Grenache from Krankl.' - Robert Parker

Quilceda Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon

'Incorporating a mere 2% of Merlot (from Palengat Vineyard) and dominated by fruit from Champoux, with strong assists from Red Mountain’s Klipsun and Tapteil, Quilceda Creek’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon perpetuates the deeply toasted nuttiness, bittersweet herbal intensity, and above all chocolate and dark berry confiture familiar from its stable mates. But here there are liberal sprinklings of baking spices; headily decadent floral garlands; and high-toned suggestions of fruit distillate – kirsch, framboise, sloe – to add complexity and allure. As with the other Quilceda 2009s, torrefaction and richness are not purchased at the expense of vivacity, as this flagship Cabernet positively courses with energy, leaving the tongue aquiver. The sheer palate-staining finishing intensity of berry concentrate brings some realization of the tannin underlying this powerful Cabernet, but given how mouth-coating and sweetly rich it is, no obvious sense of grain let alone roughness can be detected. I suspect this will have two decade’s solid aging potential.' - Wine Advocate

Schrader Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Schrader

"I’ll keep my notes on the 2009s brief, but as one can see, these are among the superstars of the vintage. I do not envision any of them meriting a perfect score, which will finally break the trifecta of perfection for the CCS, but these will all be mid to upper-90 point wines because they are that good. As Thomas Brown explained to me, it was a year of higher yields, cooler temperatures, and virtually all of the vineyards were harvested before the deluge arrived in mid-October. The 2009s are all made from the same Clones as the 2008s. I thought the three top cuvees were the T6, CCS and Schrader, but the RBS looks profound as well. The only wine that is perhaps lighter than expected is the George III. The 2009s should be more evolved, gorgeous to drink out of the gate, and last for 15-20 years as opposed to 30-40." Bergstrom 'Cumberland Reserve' Pinot Noir

Assembled from all of their five estate vineyards, Bergstrom’s 2010 Pinot Noir Cumberland Reserve, he emphasizes, “is not an ‘I do all of my single vineyards first and whatever’s left goes into a vat’ kind of wine. We’re actually trying to make two really different selections.” Fresh red raspberry and red currant tinged with rose hip and cardamom all entertain the nose, and a palate that displays palpably high extract but polished, silken, texture and levity as well. Mouthwateringly juicy and salt-tinged as well as glycerol-rich, revealing toasty nut oil and meaty pan scraping savor in its long finish, this is going to prove highly versatile and infectious over the next 8-10 years. Jamie Kutch 'Savoy Vineyard' Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

The 2010 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard is another pretty, feminine wine. High-toned floral notes meld into crushed raspberries, sweet spices and mint. At times the Savoy is a bit fragile, but it is nevertheless highly attractive and seductive. The Savoy was vinified with 100% destemmed fruit and aged in neutral oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.

Jamie Kutch 'McDougall Ranch' Pinot Noir

The 2010 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is super-impressive. It bursts from the glass with terrific energy in its dark red cherries, freshly cut flowers, minerals and spices. There is a sense of vibrancy to the McDougall Ranch that is highly appealing. Subtle hints of French oak linger on the finish. This is the most complete of the 2010s. The McDougall Ranch was made with 50% whole clusters. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

Kistler Vineyards, 'Kistler Vineyard' Pinot Noir

'Ash, game, tar, licorice, incense and dark cherries are some of the notes that emerge from the 2010 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard. A pretty, soft, understated wine, the 2010 also has a hint of wildness running through it. At present, the 2010 is a bit compact, but I very much like the sense of grace here. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish, adding a burst of freshness and vivacity to a finish underpinned by lovely streaks of saline minerality. In 2010 yields were too low for Kistler to bottle the Cuvee Elizabeth Pinot. The little fruit that came in was blended into the Kistler Vineyard Pinot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. Felton Road 'Bannockburn' Chardonnay

The 2011 Chardonnay opens with toasty / nutty notes complementing an aromatic core of ripe peaches, grapefruit and green mango and a whiff of cedar. Kistler Vineyards, Kistler Chardonnay 'Les Noisetiers'

'The 2011 Chardonnay Les Noisetieres is a wonderful introduction to the Kistler wines. Floral-laced white and yellow orchard fruits jump from the glass in a wine that is surprisingly open and accessible for the year. I especially like the creaminess and expressiveness of the finish. There is a lot to like here. The Noisetieres is by far Kistler’s largest production wine and is much more easily available than the vineyard designates. In 2011 it is absolutely delicious. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. ' - Wine Advocate

Domaine Peyre Rose, Clos des Cistes

'The Peyre Rose 2002 Coteaux du Languedoc Clos des Cistes smells of cherry, plum, roasted meat, and pungent herbs. With strikingly pronounced iodine, brine, and wet stone emerging along with distilled pit fruits and deep meatiness on the palate, this presents a firm impression of underlying extract and remarkably fresh fruit for a late-bottled wine of its age. At the same time, there is glycerin to lend a soothing texture and toasted pecan and brown spices introduce a suggestion of sweetness even as the wine finishes blazingly bright. This is a wine that one imagines will remain dynamic, although more harmony may emerge in the course of 3-5 years. A bottle that had been opened for a day was more pronouncedly mineral and slightly sparer, but otherwise surprisingly little-evolved. ' - Wine Advocate

Domaine Peyre Rose, Clos Syrah Leone

'The 2002 Coteaux du Languedoc Clos Syrah Leone displays as usual a more delicate style than the corresponding Clos des Ciste. Black raspberry in fresh and distilled form, black tea, lavender, and black truffle scent the nose, leading to a supple yet bright palate, featuring low-toned woodsy, fungal, and game notes. Black olive and further bitter-sweet herbal notes rise on the palate. This has a spare beauty, refinement of texture, and fascinating finishing complexity. I would opt for enjoying it over the next 2-3 years rather than filing it away to compete with the historically top contenders in the Peyre Rose Pantheon.' - Wine Advocate

Domaine Peyre-Rose, Syrah 'Leone'

Soria’s 2003 Coteaux du Languedoc Clos Syrah Leone (incorporating as always 12-15% Mourvedre) leads with aromas of toasted nuts, and baked black fruits. With a distinctly bitter fruit skin edge but more sap and less tannic severity than the corresponding Clos des Cistes, this finishes with decidedly animal as well as black fruit length. Fritz Haag, Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese A P #10

'Reflecting slightly deeper soils with more fine particulate slate than the A.P. #6, the Haags’ opulent and baroque 2004 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #10 smells of melon, nougat, and honey. In the mouth, its high-fat content and candied personality, when combined with Mosel minerality, result in an impression, not just of nougat and marzipan, but of salt water taffy. If that sounds over-the-top to you, yes, no doubt some tasters will find this gaudy and overdone in opulence. But at the same time, the wine manages to be delicate in weight and deploys its abundant flavor as well as sweetness in a finish of crystalline clarity in which a juicy citrus character emerges to leave the palate refreshed and ready – if not indeed yearning – for the next sip.' - Wine Advocate
