Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia (non OWC)
'I had this wine in a blind tasting - I have had it frequently, and have never failed to give it a perfect rating. At the same time, I have often mis-identified it in blind tastings as the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild. In this tasting, the wine was phenomenal. The color remains an opaque purple. The bouquet is beginning to develop secondary aromas of cedar and truffles to go along with its intense cassis, black-raspberry, blackberry, tarry, toasty personality. Exceptionally dense, concentrated, and full-bodied, this wine possesses layers of concentrated fruit that are beautifully balanced by the wine's sweet tannin and well-integrated acidity. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. A monumental Cabernet Sauvignon, it is one of the greatest wines made this century. Tasting after tasting continues to confirm this wine's surreal level of quality. Despite being 11 years old, it remains youthful. My best guess for when it will reach full maturity is between 2000-2025. What a wine!' - Robert Parker

Marchesi Antinori, Solaia (Not OC)
"The 1990 Solaia is slightly more concentrated than the 1990 Tignanello, with a saturated purple color, and a classic, international nose of cassis, lead pencil, vanillin, and smoke. It is gorgeously rich, with a fat, unctuous texture, and a long, highly extracted finish. Well-balanced and already delicious, it remains unevolved and is potentially a 12-20 year wine. In the context of recent Solaias, I would rate it a worthy competitor to the other-worldly 1985. It is certainly much more opulent, with sweeter, jammier, richer fruit than the 1988 (most recently rated 88 points)." Robert Parker

Romano Dal Forno, Amarone
The opaque purple-colored 1995 Amarone is nearly perfect. It is reminiscent of super-concentrated blackberry liqueur infused with incense, smoke, and minerals. Full-bodied, dense, and chewy, this huge offering possesses remarkable purity and liveliness for its size and intensity.
Amarone is an acquired taste, given its size as well as earthy, tarry characteristics. Certainly this wine reaches new levels of extract and richness, yet is dry, well-balanced, and, because of its extravagant richness, able to hide the whopping 16.5% alcohol it routinely possesses.
This is the product of a true genius. It should drink well for a minimum of two decades. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Gaja, Barbaresco
The 1996 Barbaresco exhibits a dense ruby color as well as a forward nose of cherry liqueur, earth, truffle, mineral, and spicy scents. Rich, full-bodied, and seductive, with its moderate tannin largely concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit and extract, this gorgeously pure offering gets my nod as the finest Barbaresco produced by Gaja since 1990. 'Dense ruby-colored, with a tight personality, the 1999 Sassicaia offers up aromas of smoke, vanilla, and red as well as black currants. Feudi di San Gregorio 'Serpico'
Feudi’s 2000 Serpico is quite expressive. Wild dark cherries, dried flowers, herbs, game, ash and bacon fat are some of the notes that flow from this rich, powerful Serpico. The French oak adds a measure of volume I am not sure the wine needs, but this is nevertheless a beautiful, almost fully mature Serpico that is a great choice for drinking today and over the next seven to eight years, give or take. Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, Masseto
'The 2003 Masseto opens with a huge, expressive super-ripe nose. Ample and expansive on the palate, it displays much opulence in its generous fruit, with awesome concentration, outstanding length and a lovely vein of minerality which provides a level of freshness that is surprising for the vintage. A lingering note of sweetness punctuates the long finish. It should drink well for at least another decade, although it is absolutely irresistible today. It is a stunning wine. Owing to the challenging nature of the vintage, in 2003 Masseto was made only from the central part of the vineyard which is planted with the oldest vines. 93/Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.' - Wine Advocate

Poderi Rocche dei Manzoni Bricco Manzoni
The 2004 Langhe Bricco Manzoni (80% Nebbiolo, 20% Barbera) remains an incredibly primary red endowed with tons of ripe dark fruit supported by big, imposing tannins. The Barbera has given the wine an additional touch of ripeness in the fruit yet the wine remains incredibly shut down and hard to fully appreciate at this stage. Still, from time to time the fruit emerges from behind the wall of massive tannins, suggesting patience is the only thing required. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. The Wine Advocate.

Biondi Santi, Brunello Di Montalcino 'II Greppo'
'Biondi-Santi’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is an intriguing wine. Silky, refined tannins frame a core of perfumed dark red fruits as this compact, linear Brunello opens up in the glass. This medium-bodied Brunello is in need of serious bottle age, but the potential seems for the wine to develop nicely over the coming years. The estate’s 2004 is not a blockbuster, but rather a delicate, ethereal style of Brunello. It is also one of the finer wines made from this part of Montalcino in 2004. Conterno Fantino, Barolo 'Sori Ginestra'
Conterno-Fantino have once again produced one of the vintage’s finest wines with their stunning 2004 Barolo Sori Ginestra, which is just as impressive in bottle as it has been on the several occasions I have tasted it from barrel. This explosive, heady Barolo bursts onto the palate with seamless layers of ripe dark fruit, black cherries, menthol, cinnamon, pine and minerals, revealing profound depth and richness. It offers superb length, gorgeous, sweet tannins and a finish that lasts forever. Although it is a surprisingly accessible Sori Ginestra at this stage, I expect it will close down at some point in the near future. Readers who have an opportunity to taste this wine in the next few months should not hesitate to do so. This is a remarkable Barolo in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Wine Advocate.

Romano Dal Forno, Vigna Seré Passito
'The 2004 Vigna Sere is the perfect conclusion to a vintage that will go down as one of Dal Forno’s most magical. Sweet, silky tannins support layers of super-refined, elegant fruit in this magical sweet red. Mocha, espresso, new leather, raspberry jam and spices emerge with time in the glass, but this is really a wine that shows off textural finesse more than anything else. I have tasted this wine many times since it was in barrel and later in bottle. It has never been anything less than spellbinding. It is one of the most magical sweet dessert wines I have ever tasted. At eight years of age the 2004 remains a an infant. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.' - Wine Advocate

Marchesi Antinori, Solaia
'The 2004 Solaia is breathtaking, as it so often is. Soaring aromatics lead to a sweet, layered expression of dark fruit. The wine possesses super clarity and precision with a gorgeous inner tension that carries all the way through to the long finish. The tannins remain incredibly finessed and silky. This is a more restrained, elegant style than the full-throttle 2001. 2004 is the first vintage in which the component wines were aged separately, rather than together, as had been the custom in previous vintages. Biondi Santi, Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 'II Greppo'
"The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is impeccable and classy. Ripe red fruits, flowers and minerals are some of the nuances that emerge from this fresh, vibrant wine. The fruit remains incredibly youthful and pure all the way through to the finish. This is a surprisingly supple, fruit-driven style of Riserva from Biondi-Santi, and with time in the glass the reluctant bouquet finally emerges. Some of the explosiveness of the best vintages (such as 2001) is missing, but the wine nevertheless impresses for its finesse and impeccable overall balance. The 2004 Riserva looks to have a long life ahead of it, but it is so harmonious that opening a bottle in its youth, while not optimal, is far from infanticide. Conti Costanti, Brunello di Montalcino
The 1995 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits a dark ruby/garnet color as well as a big, smoky, earthy, slightly oaky nose with notes of licorice and red currants. Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, Masseto (US Back Labels)
"The 2005 Masseto (Merlot) is simply gorgeous. A wine of extraordinary class and personality, it remains very primary in its dark fruit, licorice, cassis and toasted oak. It offers notable concentration and well-integrated tannins, all of which convey an impression of awesome harmony, finesse and balance. The tricky growing season seems to have been less of an issue for the Merlot, particularly in the old-vine Masseto Centrale vineyard. The 2005 Masseto has been superb every time I have tasted it thus far. As is often the case, the wine requires at least a few years of bottle age before it becomes approachable. Marchesi Antinori, Solaia
'The 2005 Solaia is elegant and refined, yet it remains incredibly primary. Still, it is hard not to admire the wine’s layered expression of blue and black fruits. The oak remains prominent, but I am confident the wine will come together with bottle age. The Solaia vineyard is one of the most unique terroirs in Italy, and the wine has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle, even in smaller vintages. Campoleone, Lamborghini
Dark cherries, smoke, licorice and earthiness are some of the nuances that emerge from 2006 Campoleone, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot that spent 12 months in French oak. This is a decidedly dark, brooding red from Lamborghini. As good as it is, I can’t help feeling that the wine is trapped by excessive concentration and new oak. With a lighter touch this could be a truly important, benchmark wine for Umbria. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021 - Wine Advocate

Argiano, Solengo
'Argiano’s 2006 Solengo is an explosive dense wine packed with blueberry jam, grilled herbs, tar and smoke. This is another structured, powerful wine that needs time for the tannins to soften but the wine is quite promising, even at this early stage. In 2006 Solengo has taken on elements of a Bordeaux-like classicism I find very appealing, although the Tuscan warmth inevitably comes through. Not a bad combination. The Sangiovese is gone, and Solengo is now 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 25% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.' - Antonio Galloni

Tua Rita, Giusto di Notri
'The estate’s 2006 Giusto di Notri is another weighty, powerful offering bursting with tons of primary fruit. Sweet herbs, cassis and graphite swirl around in the glass, adding further complexity. Like the other wines in this line-up, the Giusto di Notri needs time to reach the full range of its potential, but it is awfully impressive even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.' - Antonio Galloni
