Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Echézeaux

'Powerful and expressive aromas of spice, sous bois, remnants of red fruit and warm earth lead to more spice and very strong notes of underbrush and decaying leaves on the palate. However, the finish is still very intense and packs very good punch and the backend has more than a touch of rusticity to it. This is still in fine condition and while there is no further improvement to be had, neither is there any risk of imminent decline either. Tasted multiple times, consistent notes.' - Burghound

'A remarkably ripe and now completely secondary nose features notes of spice, earth and sous bois and is followed by rich, elegant and fantastically complex flavors that coat the palate and deliver truly outstanding length on the velvety finish. If one wanted to nit pick, a bit more acid balance would be nice but I like this a lot as it's incredibly seductive though I'm sensing that even perfectly stored examples are beginning to tire just a bit. This is a really lovely wine and the '78 is one of those rare vintages where the Richebourg surpasses the La Tâche. Relatively consistent notes.' - Burghound

'The perfumed nose has now gone almost completely secondary with hints of sous bois adding nuance to the classic spice box character of a fine RSV. I particularly like the purity of expression (yet no lack of power) which combined with the outstanding length make this an excellent effort that should continue to hold at this level for a number of years. Domaine Mommessin, Clos de Tart

'The first wine to display evident bricking though the center is still ruby. A warm and expressive nose is now full-on secondary in character with intensely floral notes that also evidence earthy and spicy nuances, both of which continue onto the rich, full and notably serious flavors that possess a round, supple and generous mid-palate impression before culminating in a firm and somewhat austere and linear but wonderfully long finish that is a bit strict if not dry. This is a bit like the '90 in that some will appreciate the Cistercian character and others will find the austerity not to their taste. Personally, I like this as it would go extremely well with rich foods but it's not hard to understand that it would not be for everyone. Either way, in terms of drinkability, the '88 has arrived at a drink or hold stage.' - Burghound

'Intense, elegant and pure spicy black fruit aromas that still remain relativley, if not completely, primary even after 19 years are followed by rich, full, robust and still moderately structured flavors of notable detail and precision that culminate in a wonderfully long, palate staining finish. At this point, the right food is important as the '89 GE is just now arriving at the front edge of real drinkability and it should hold here for years to come. Solidly impressive juice whose only flaw is the barest trace of finishing greenness. In sum, a very good rather than great example, at least by the lofty standards of this wine.' - Burghound

"Wonderful aromatics of Vosne spice, black fruit and hints of earth and violets followed by rich, velvety flavors of stunning complexity and exceptional length. This has finally started to open and shows even more promise now than it did before as the hardness of the tannins is melting, revealing classic RSV qualities. 'Explosive red and black fruit that is still quite primary in nature with flavors that are very dense and wonderfully textured all supported by a still pronounced tannic structure. Completely different in its tactile qualities than the Romanée St. Vivant and this remains remarkably youthful. The extract completely buffers the substantial tannins and the exquisite balance should enable this to evolve over many years.' - Burghound

Domaine Leroy, Corton Les Renardes (not OWC)

This is finally beginning to display signs of coming around in our lifetime as the nose reveals the initial signs of maturity with its black fruit and violet-infused nose that is no longer completely primary. And the big, robust, powerful and exceptionally dense flavors are also beginning to soften and while the supporting tannic spine is still firm, it's no longer dominant on the gorgeously long finish. To be sure, this remains a big and robust Corton cut from classic vintage cloth but it should be drinking well from its 20th birthday on - Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Classic and explosive RSV nose with superbly elegant black fruit nose framed by a subtle touch of wood that just exudes Asian spice followed by tight, pure, concentrated and intense flavors of outstanding complexity and length. This is dense and still quite young. A dramatic, extremely impressive wine that has it all and I would suggest giving this at least another 5 years of cellar time and drink over the next 15. 'his has evolved somewhat more positively than I imagined and still has at least some potential remaining. The nose initially revealed considerable stem influence but after 45 minutes of airing, the spice and dark fruit elements began to assert themselves with the overall impression being one of elegance, purity and impressive complexity. The firm middle weight plus flavors are detailed, minerally, powerful and beautifully focused, all wrapped in a lingering finish of superb length. This is classy juice and while the '93 Riche can be drunk with pleasure now, for my taste it still could benefit from another 4 to 5 years of cellar time (though note that it will age for decades to come). That said, if the urge moves you, this is already a lovely wine. Tasted on multiple occasions.' - Burghound

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche (not OWC)

Stylistically this borrows elements from both the '97 and the '96 as it combines moderate floral notes with most of the spice soy and hoisin of the '96 plus the densest flavors of any vintage to this point. The mid-palate doesn't have quite the same sap of the '96 and the long dusty finish offers a hint of chocolate and violets. This too has the potential to be very long lived and even at 13 years of age it's clear that it still has another 7 to 10 years to go before it reaches its full potential. Multiple notes with consistent results; in fact a recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was even better than the bottle in the big La Tâche tasting held in early '03.

"A gorgeous, spicy and expressive nose of mostly black fruit aromas combines with rich, sweet and still tight medium full and quite firmly structured flavors that possess a long though slightly edgy and austere finish. Note that this bottle showed better than the one reviewed in the big Richebourg retrospective held in October, 2001. I would not touch another bottle for at least 5 years and this easily has 20 year+ potential as it will require a long time to completely unwind. Tasted on multiple occasions with consistent notes." Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche (not OWC)

Everything that I saw from cask made it into bottle intact and words remain inadequate to describe just how good this wine is, as the '99 is a classic La Tâche in every respect with its incredibly pure marvelously intense oriental spice box nose that merges seamlessly into big rich and enveloping flavors of hoisin and pure pinot extract of indescribable complexity and length. The big tannins are completely wrapped in velvet and the finish simply does not quit. This is destined to become one of the all-time great vintages of La Tâche and even at 98 points it's clear that I was too conservative and thus I am raising my score accordingly. Moreover among the many bottles that I have been blessed to have tried I have never had a bottle that was anything less than sensational. However note that the '99 LT is going to be a long-distance runner so a strategy of cellar and forget is strongly advised at least for the next decade or so. Multiple and consistent notes. A discreet floral note adds interest to the ripe dark berry fruit that carries a distinct sauvage note as there is a smoked meat character that continues onto the velvety, rich, pure and mouth coating flavors that are also blessed with huge underlying material that relegates the firm tannic spine to the background and makes this seem unduly forward.
