A Grape Night In

Published by Marjorie Galaud on 23/08/2013

On Wednesday night we went to a pop-up event in The Skyroom near London Bridge, A Grape Night In . The theme for the tasting was Extreme… well it certainly was that!

The girls behind A Grape Night In are the lovely Kiki and Laura. They hold regular tasting events around London but only started this #winewednesday pop up at The Skyroom, London Bridge a few months ago. The concept is simple. They pick a theme, then choose wines to fit it, then choose food to match the wines. You can have as little or as much as you want, you can mix the menu up, it’s totally up to you.

With a beautiful view of the Shard, the event space has been decorated with ‘Extreme’ taste including a fun super-size menu alongside a tiny menu that you need to read through a magnifying glass.

After a team consultation, we decided to try every dish and wine match on the menu:

A grape night in
  • Extremely Hot - Chilli muffin and a bottle of Txacoli
  • Extremely Dangerous – Crocodile samosas with some Greco Fiano grown on the side of a volcano!
  • Extremely Rare – Truffle toast with quail’s eggs and caviar served with Gran Cerdo (Tempranillo)
  • Extremely Boring – Pork chipolatas with cannelloni beans, accompanied with Chateau Tire Pe ‘le DieM’ (Bordeaux)
  • Extremely Mind-Blowing – Stinking bishop ice cream!! with a Georgian Chinuri
  • Extremely Explosive – a cigar with yoghurt and peanut butter served with a sparkling Cabernet Franc – Zéro Pointé Rosé (Loire Valley)

Some delicious, some curious and some just…Extreme.

The girls are wonderful hosts and the location is super-cool – fancy a view of the shard from the loo? What we loved about it is the girls’ down-to-earth attitude to wine. There is nothing pretentious about this pop up, it’s just great fun, and the wines are really good. It would be very easy to go lowest common denominator and pick cheap bottles at big mark-ups (like many other places do), but that’s not the point here. They want you to love wine as much as they do. The food is fantastic too. We were seriously impressed and had to order a second portion of crocodile samosas. The last ‘EXTREME’ event is next Wednesday, with the theme for September changing to ‘Vintage’. We’re already counting the days.
