Bordeaux 2020 Overview
The Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur campaign is now getting into its stride. The early reports coming out of Bordeaux are indicating a very strong vintage indeed.
The latest in a trio of top vintages, following the excellent 2018 and 2019, 2020 looks to be another great year in Bordeaux. Jancis Robinson and her team have issued their scores early - the Right Bank looks to be more consistent with the top Chateaux of the Left Bank also performing well.
The Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown released her scores last week. In her summarising report she suggested of the quality wines, they are “right up there with the best of 2018 and 2019”.
Right Bank Shines in another excellent vintage
When looking through the reports it is clear that the top wines are those from the Right Bank, with Merlot performing exceptionally well in the conditions of 2020. “The best examples have beautifully pure and perfumed expressions of “ripeness”—some on the crunchier fruit side and others are juicier. The signature this year seems to be a fantastic mélange of black, blue and red fruits, creating a complex layered effect that is stunning” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown on the Right Bank reds.
Conversely the Left Bank was a little more irregular, “The best wines of the Médoc are a paradox—lighter bodied, elegant, perfumed head-turners! They would fool you into thinking that they come from a far cooler vintage”.
