Grape Britain: Announcing English Wine Week
The 21st June heralds the Summer Solstice and the 24th Midsummers Day. What better way to kick off the start of summer than with a celebration of English wine. The 19th – 27th June is officially English Wine Week.
The sun is now shining: garden parties, barbeques, staycations and a summer of sport are the bill of fare so why not enjoy all this with a chilled bottle of fizz? The domestic wine industry has gone from strength to strength and in the summer sun English wine positively sparkles. Our climate is well suited to the early ripening Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties and these grapes are perfect when blended to make sparkling wine in both white and rosé styles. English wine is starting to become a serious part of the global wine picture - GB Wine, the industry body, now reports over 3500 hectares of vines in the UK which is an increase of 150% since 2010. This has resulted in 10.5 million bottles ready to drink this year (72% of which is sparkling wine).
But we don’t just make award winning sparkling; there are other grape varieties well suited to our cooler climate. Bacchus for example is a relatively new variety only being released for cultivation in the 1970s. Named after the Roman god of wine this grape is very early ripening and really thrives in English growing conditions. Luckily for Roberson Wine customers London Cru produces an award winning Bacchus and the new 2020 vintage is ready for English Wine Week!
In all there are some amazing vineyards across the South East and the West Country producing incredible wines. English wine has so much to offer - it's environmentally friendly, supports local businesses and the wine is pretty fantastic too.
Roberson are marking the week with the launch of Bacchus 2020 from London Cru
