'THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF' - NEW RELEASES FROM MOUNT EDEN
“This collection of new releases from Mount Eden and sister label Domaine Eden is full of highlights…Two thousand sixteen looks like an absolutely magical vintage. The Mount Eden Chardonnay Reserve and Cabernet Sauvignon are truly magnificent and easily among the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson.”
When it comes to new releases, few estates get our pulse racing quite as much as those from Mount Eden. A set of wines that have been described by Antonio Galloni as “easily among the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson”.
When we think of Mount Eden Vineyards our thoughts are often drawn to the Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that is frequently compared to its neighbouring Ridge Monte Bello. Two wines that share almost identical terroir, the soils and topography formed by the nearby San Andreas Fault. Both sites producing fantastic old vine cool climate Cabernet, wines that will age gracefully well into their thirties, and certainly rival the finest from Bordeaux at a fraction of the cost.
The map below shows the proximity of the two sites.
The 2016 however, is more than a match. Identical scores from Antonio Galloni but one major difference, the price. 2016 Ridge Monte Bello is available for over £150 a bottle IB, Mount Eden will release at under £ 70 IB.
Mount Eden Vineyards is one of the most historic winemaking estates in California. Set above Silicon Valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the vineyards sit above the clouds and produce some of the finest Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon in the entire state. The estate is famous for its benchmark cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The estate's vines were originally planted by legendary (not to mention maverick) winemaker Martin Ray back in the 1940s. Their clonal material is some of the oldest and most revered in the state – offspring of Mount Eden's exceptional vines can be found planted in some of the best vineyard sites from Sonoma to Santa Barbara, used to make wine for some of the biggest names in California.
Ellie and Jeffrey Patterson took over the historic estate in 1981 and in some way became the custodians of this special site. Jeffrey is still in charge of the winemaking, 40 years making wine on one estate is unheard of in California. His experience and knowledge of the vineyards has lead to some of the most impressive wines in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The old vines on shaly soil produce wines of deep concentration and complexity yet are kept incredibly fresh from the altitude and climate. The Pattersons and team have perfected the craft of making wines of purity, balance and power from their precious vineyards. These are truly world class wines that can age brilliantly, and that could rival any wines from California.
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has achieved the highest ever score for the Estate and it is easy to see why. Antonio Galloni’s note really says it all. As we have mentioned, the new releases are “full of highlights” and it is not just about the Cabernet, a summary of the new releases below;
2016 Cabernet Sauvignon– 98 Points “Mount Eden’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon represents the essence of what Cabernet Sauvignon is all about in the Santa Cruz Mountains…the Cabernet Sauvignon is simply off the charts. It’s another utterly breathtaking wine from Mount Eden.”
2016 Chardonnay Reserve – 97 Points “The 2016 Chardonnay Reserve is the stuff dreams are made of… All I can say is: Wow!”
2017 Chardonnay – 94 Points “The 2017 Chardonnay melds together the natural raciness of the year with the classicism that is such a Mount Eden signature…. Today, it is absolutely fabulous."
2017 Pinot Noir– 93 Points “The 2017 Pinot Noir is a very pretty, open-knit wine…decidedly forward, silky wine that looks like it will offer its best drinking sooner rather than later."
