In other regions, it goes by Chasselas, but in Germany it's known as Gutedel. Wonderfully refreshing, it's rather similar to some Chablis or even Muscadet. This is a cracking value white wine made from an unfancied varietal.
Husband and wife team Hans-Bert Espe and Silke Wolf founded their own estate in 2003 and made their first wines in a disused Canadian air-bunker. With old-vine plantings in the villages of Kenzingen and Malterdingen, they have a reputation for making some of the best red wines in the region.
Holger Koch's wines are very much German with a French accent. This Weissburgunder is similar to the very best of Alsace Pinot Blanc. Grown on higher elevation, windy terraces atop the Kaiserstuhl hills, that produce pure, perfectly ripe grapes with balanced flavour and texture.
Inspired by Burgundy, made in Baden. After spending a year in Gevrey, Claus's son Johannes has taken over the reins at the family winery and is producing high quality wines that are incredibly good value. This lush Pinot from the warmer southern region of Baden is quite full, with lots of character and minerality.
The summers in southern Baden are now so consistent that its now possible to successfully cultivate Syrah and Ziereisen make small amounts of this wonderfully crafted Northern Rhône style expression. Fresh and elegant while vibrant and aromatic all making for a very drinkable Syrah.
