Alexander Zahel is the fourth generation winemaker at his Vienna based winery and has focused his efforts on transitioning towards organic and biodynamic production. He is a champion of the Viennese Field Blend aka 'Gemichster Satz' and produces beautifully presented and exceptionally well-made white wines. Intriguing and complex The Nussberg feels slightly Burgundian with a majority use of Chardonnay supported by proportions of Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder.
Produced from the single vineyard, 'Hermanschachern', which mirrors the soils of Chablis; rich in ancient fossils and oyster shells. Full-bodied, with great acidity, this excellently shows site definition. This is a Grand Cru of Austrian wines. The vineyard is now certified organic and suitable for vegans.
From Alex Zahel's annual release of Amphora aged wines, supply is extremely limited with each with just one 320 litre handmade Italian clay vessels dedicated to each wine. This outstanding Riesling spends 12 months ageing on its fine lees followed by bottling without fining or filtration. The purity of Riesling and imparted minerality from the amphora are a perfect match.
