“Plenty of classic Cabernet markers here, with menthol, truffle, black olive and cocoa, toasted cedar and still firm tannins. A great wine, still young at 15 years old with a clear long life ahead. A warm vintage that saw heat spikes through the summer and a small crop with great concentration. From an estate that comprises vineyards as well as apple and olive orchards, covering 650 acres in the foothills of the Macayamas. It was first founded by civil war veteran EJ Church, so is truly part of the earliest history of Napa Valley – it had fallen into disrepair after Prohibition until the Halls bought in in 1989 and brought it back to life.”
