Smith-MadroneMeet the Maker

A visit to Stuart and Charles Smith’s winery, high up on Spring Mountain, is like a journey back to the halcyon days of 1970s Napa Valley. This is not the land of technological wine making, fancy tasting rooms and slick marketing – this is a down-home, honest and authentic wine…

  • Pure, fresh blackcurrant fruit and cedar flavours; balanced acidity and fine tannins; elegant and stylish.
  • As well as Cabernet, this is 7% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc - a Bordeaux-style blend.
  • Smith-Madrone's watchword is elegance - this is like a good Bordeaux, with the fruit turned up a little.
  • Lovely on release, but can age and improve with 5+ years.
  • A great alternative to Bordeaux with lamb and other grilled and roasted meats.

"The winery’s estate Cabernet is from mostly dry-farmed vines grown at the top of Spring Mountain, elevation 550m, and in this vintage the sense of place shines through – especially with only 45% new oak used for barrel ageing.

"It’s very much a mountain Cabernet, with classic structure, cassis and graphite aromas, and deep, savoury red-fruit flavours with hints of mint. The tannins are powerful but very fine. Drink 2020 – 2036"
