Kutch is one of the metonymies of Pinot Noirs’s perfection in California. This young estate encourages their grapes to express their natural greatness. This vineyard lies up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, not far from Rhys Horseshoe and Alpine Vineyards.
Found on Mt. Eden in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, the Peter Martin Ray vineyard dates back to the late 1800s and was one of the first sites in California to be planted with Pinot Noir. Replanted in 1979, the old dry-farmed vines cling to the rocky landscape at over 420m elevation. The depleted, exposed shale soils are notoriously nutrient poor and the vines work hard to generate low yields of fruit with incredible concentration and depth.
The Mount Eden Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with a hint of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is a unique find in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a place usually known for Pinot. Its roots go back to a 1940s vineyard by Martin Ray, with a lineage tracing to Bordeaux's Chateau Margaux. Recognised for being one of the most age-worthy Cabernets from California, it offers an earthy, spicy aroma with a touch of black fruits. The winemaking process includes natural fermentation in small tanks, a two-year stint in barrels, and bottling without filtering. The result is a wine with a firm structure, flavours of spice, plum, cherry, and black currant, and a complex finish of mushroom, dark fruit, and dry tannins. Robert Parker hails Mount Eden as a standout estate, delivering a wine that's both powerful and elegantly restrained.
