Bordeaux’s famed subregion of the Medoc, found on the left bank of the Gironde river, is perhaps the most highly acclaimed wine growing region on earth. It encompasses top appellations such as Saint Julien, Pauillac and Margaux, and is home to the 1855 classification that has endured to this day. This classification ranks the Medoc’s top producers from ‘First Growth’ down to ‘Fifth Growth’, with incredible wines to be find on every level (although the first growths are generally viewed to be the very best). The wines made in the Medoc are generally red blends, with Cabernet Sauvignon being the key grape variety. They are made to age for decades to come, though in recent vintages producers have been keen to ensure their wines are still approachable in their youth.
