The stunning vineyards of South Africa are not only among the most beautiful in the world, they also produce some exceptionally fine wine. For a long time the South African wine scene was dominated by bulk production and little quality wine was made. Now, it’s very different. There are plenty of well-established estates making wines which manage to combine some of the bold fruit flavours of the New World with the elegance and refinement of the Old. Increasingly, there are also winemakers from a new generation embracing the very latest trends towards naturally made wine and focussing on drinkability and character. The South African climate, with its plentiful sunshine tempered by cool winds from Antarctica is ideal for wine growing and its potential is really starting to show through in the finished wines.
