Rioja is one of the most popular wine growing regions in Spain, and is particularly well known for producing delicious red wines from predominantly Grenache and Tempranillo. There are several different classifications of Rioja, each indicating how long it has been aged before release. ‘Crianza’ indicates one year ageing in oak, before another year ageing in bottle. ‘Reserva’ indicates one year ageing in oak, before two years ageing in bottle. Finally there is ‘Gran Reserva’ which has the longest ageing period, and as a result tends to be the most expensive of Rioja’s wines. It sees two years ageing in oak, before another three years in bottle. Rioja is also home to some wonderful white and rosé wines, often produced in a fresh and fruity style, though there are traditional examples that can age for decades.
