Barbera is northern Italy’s most planted grape variety, and 60% of those plantings are in the most famous red wine region - Piedmont. As such Barbera occupies a key place in Italian wine. Nebbiolo may produce the very finest wines in Piedmont, but Barbera is its perfect counterpart. Ready to drink earlier, it can be made in a number of different styles, from cheap, tangy and refreshing to dense, oaky and fruity. Along with other Italian grape varieties it is now starting to become popular in Australia and California, where winemakers are searching for an alternative the ubiquitous international varieties.
