Grenache, also known as Garnacha, is one of the world’s most planted grape varieties. In France, where it is second only to Merlot in terms of total plantings, it is best known as the principle grape of the southern Rhône. It is usually the senior partner in blends for Châteauneuf-du-Pape and indeed everywhere is more often seen blended than not, particularly with Syrah and Mourvèdre. It is also found widely in the New World and thrives in hot, dry climates. Wines made from Grenache often have a distinctive herby, spicy character.
