Despite it being tricky to grow, and very tricky to grow well enough to produce very good wine, Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. This is largely due to the wines of Burgundy, which represent the ultimate aspiration for many winemakers. In Burgundy, the climate is ideally suited to Pinot Noir and the region is responsible for some of the very greatest of reds. Pinot Noir’s ability to convey the character of each individual vineyard is what enables red Burgundy to be so special, but that same quality also exposes the merely ordinary. It does not respond well to extreme heat, but in cooler sites, in the right hands the wines are approachable when young, with soft red fruit flavours, and, with time, capable of developing into something infinitely more splendid, complex and ethereal.
