Gewürztraminer is best known as one of the major varieties planted in Alsace. The wines it makes there are highly distinctive, with characteristic aromas and flavours of lychees or rose petals and relatively high alcohol levels. It can be anything from bone dry to intensely sweet and is made by all major producers. Outside Alsace it is not much seen in France and is also something of a rarity abroad. It does not respond well to very hot climates, so the most successful plantings of it tend to be in slightly cooler areas, and as such it is found sporadically throughout the wine world.
