Pinot Gris is the name given in Alsace, Pinot Grigio in Italy (usually). Although they are the same thing, the two terms have come to be associated with two different styles, thanks to the floods of mass-market, dilute Pinot Grigio which are to be found on supermarket shelves. That’s changing, however, and there is now plenty of ‘Pinot Grigio’ being made by quality producers which is similar in style to the best wines of Alsace - intensely full-bodied, sometimes smoky and with fruit flavours of apricot and peach. Although usually dry, sweet, long-lived examples are also found, especially in Alsace.
