Riesling is undoubtedly one of the greatest white grape varieties, producing wines which not only precisely express the differences between individual vineyards, but which are also capable of ageing and improving for longer than almost all other white wines. Riesling can range from bone dry to intensely sweet. It is naturally high in acid, which provides a crucial balance to any sugar left in the wine. Its home is Germany, where the wines have been getting progressively drier now for the past ten years. Its only French presence is in Alsace, but there it makes full-bodied, full-flavoured, usually dry, wines with exceptional ageing potential. As fashion slowly swings towards Riesling, it is now slowly appearing in new countries and regions - its potential is limitless.
