Viognier

Originally hailing from France, Viognier is now grown all over the world. Its most famous incarnation is in Condrieu in the Rhône, but it has also done well in other parts of southern France, California, Virginia, New Zealand and Australia. It is also used as a component of the red wines from Côte-Rôtie, where up to 20% can be added for its perfume and to help stabilise the colour. Viognier needs to be fully ripe to be at its best, but when it is expect an aromatic perfume of flowers, apricots and peaches and a distinctive, slightly oily texture. It is often blended with other white grapes in the Languedoc to produce interesting, full-bodied dry wines.
