Some of the most famed wines in Alsace are made at Domaine Marcel Deiss by Jean-Michel Deiss (Marcel’s grandson), who was one of the leading lights in the biodynamic movement. Jean-Michel’s primary focus is that his wines taste like the terroir they have grown in. If he had his way he would do away with telling his customers what grapes they are drinking, as he feels this is too simple and will never fully express the wine within.

The domaine is made up of 27 hectares of vineyards across a wide range of sites and terroirs. There is extreme variation in soils and microclimates, which lets Jean-Michel make a wide variety of wines and express each site’s individuality. The grapes are less important to Jean-Michel, as these are just a means of expressing the terroir, and he is known for blending different varieties - something that was prohibited until 2005.

Yields are low for all sites, and the juice is treated with great care in order to maintain its true character. Gentle pressing is followed by a very slow fermentation in large old wooden barrels using only natural yeasts. Deiss wines are pure, precise and flavoursome, and his Grand Grus are a lesson in terroir winemaking at its finest.
