Laurent Charvin has followed his father Gerard Charvin as the sixth generation at the property founded in 1851.The domain covers 8 heactares of Chateauneuf du Pape, 12 ha of Cotes du Rhone and 2 ha of Vin du Pays.
Laurent Charvin produces a delicious Chateaneuf du Pape. Robert Parker describes the style as "Burgundian" and equates the quality of the wines with Charvin's more famous neighbour, Rayas.
The wines are black fruit driven with great complexity, elegance and minerality. This is obtained thanks to very old vines, carefully tended in the northern sector of the appellation on mainly north facing slopes, and through a very simple and low-tech approach in the cellar. Vineyard work is essentially organic. No chemical or synthetic products are used, yields are kept low. In the cellar, grapes are not destemmed and the wines are both vinified and aged 100% in a large concrete tank. That’s minimal interference, with low levels of sulphur, and no wood, new or old, large or small, at all. But with a very limited production, there never seems to be enough to go around.
